20-5. Making Next Stroke from Where Previous Stroke Made

When a player elects or is required to make his next stroke from where a previous stroke was made, he must proceed as follows:

(a) On the Teeing Ground: The ball to be played must be played from within the teeing ground. It may be played from anywhere within the teeing ground and may be teed.

(b) Through the Green: The ball to be played must be dropped and when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green.

(c) In a Hazard: The ball to be played must be dropped and when dropped must first strike a part of the course in the hazard.

(d) On the Putting Green: The ball to be played must be placed on the putting green.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 20-5:
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.

So just to be clear, if I am playing a par 3 over water and hit it in the water, I can try again. Also if I am playing a par 4 that doglegs around water with the option to cut across the water to the green and I don't make it across, I can try again.
Both scenarios using a tee on the tee box as my third shot.

You ALWAYS have the option to re-hit your last shot under the same conditions (e.g. off a tee if you are on the tee) under the penalty of stroke and distance.

On a similar note: Remember when Tiger putt the ball off the green into the water at Augusta....he didn't have to play his ball using hazard options, he just replaced his ball on the green and putt again.

Sorry, but I play with this know-it-all who made me hit the second scenario off the deck without a tee, saying I had to drop. I thought he didn't know what he was talking about but just wanted to make sure.

That is part of the reason I carry an up to date rules book in my bag at all times........If someone makes a "Rules comment" that I know to be wrong I just hand them the book and ask them to show me where they got their info........Usual response in total silence ;)

Had it happen 2 days ago in a small event....guy hits his 2nd shot on a par 5 and the ball bounces off the 150 yard post in the fairway....He claims he is entitled to an automatic "Re-do" of the shot.......Handed him the rule book and asked to see where it says that.......Silence followed by "That's the way we do it here"....NO re do!!!

Now, if the tee box extended 30 yards or so up to the water, and you choose the option that allows you to drop short of the water and that place was still on the teeing ground (but way forward from the tee markers from where you hit), then obviously you would have to drop and not use a tee. This is a common choice and could be what was confusing you're friend.

Love it, it's always the perfect way to shut them up.

Had a friend the other week telling me he played a match and was taking relief from casual water in the rough and the NPR was on the fairway. His opponent would not permit the drop so he played as it lied. I told him the same thing..tell him to show you in the book.

He played a stroke play round on Friday with the same guy and similar situation.........guess what? not only did it work the guy went and checked his Rule book after the round and then apologised.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
