The South African Open - My home course

This week the SA open is being played on what I consider to be my home course namely Humewood Golf Club, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It is one of the only true links style course in SA, and also the oldest one in SA.

Some facts:

1) This is the course were I shot my career low (2 under), back in 2004, playing with a fellow GO member and my father.

2) My father actually has it in his will that when he passes, he wants his ashes to be scattered on the par 3 14th.

3) Both Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman consider this course to be one of their favorite in the world. That says a lot.

Hopefully you all get to see some of the coverage this weekend. It is not your typical course. Like all links courses, it's main defense is the wind. They will eat it alive if the wind does not blow, but it will return the favor if it does.

I saw the Nedbank Challlenge and Dunhill tournaments and I thought the courses and surrounding countryside were beautiful along with the wildlife. You have a beautiful country, with a great golfing tradition and and you have every right to be proud of it. I hope one day to take a trip there and get in some golf as well. In the meantime I look forward to checking out the South African Open this week.

Only 1 problem. I now live in Orlando FL. I really miss Port Elizabeth though. Such a beautiful laid back place. I will definitely be Tivo'ing the coverage though.

i must add, South africa is so underrated you can't imagine. I spent 3 weeks on honeymoon there, going all over the place. A friend is a travel agency director down there and arranged things. This unfortunately was before i was a golfer or i would have hit up every course there. The people, the food, the scenary, everything is first rate, and i strongly encourage people to travel there any time they can. My parents are going on safari next year there after they saw my photos. SA rocks. They just have the world's worst marketing to usa people. If you get a chance, anyone, for any reason, go there and experience what is an amazing place in so many different ways and places... Key points: you can see penguins and elephants the same day. You can see lions and leopards and rhinos and buffalos. no fence folks, just you in the open jeep with a guide. nice beaches, endless surf, great food. i'm sure the golf is awesome, i don't even have to wonder. Go!!!!

Immelman looks really strong

How come Sabbantini never comes back to play in these? All of the other big names of SA golf come back.

Anybody know why?

Or is he getting the American syndrome as we can't leave our own country?

Think Sabbatini considers himself more American these days, may be wrong though.

From the short time I've seen it, it looks like a great course. Definately a "sucker" course, drop your gaurd and it'll take you. Springbok, do you know what grass is used on the greens? I've never seen greens like that.

Looks like a pretty nice course...... From the TV coverage though I would have to say I like Fancourt better which held last years tournament. Definitely more of a 'Tour Course' based on the scores that it yielded. I would like to take a trip to South Africa someday, looks like a lot of cool things are over there....
