I NEED AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

***CALLING ALL PEEPS W/ EXPERIENCE ON HARD DRIVES***
what up fellow golfers ... i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with any external hard drives. i was looking at one ... a western digital my book premium 500gb ... and read reviews on it and seems good ...

my primary goal to do with the huge amount of space is to store photos, projects, and artwork and to back-up my previous artwork into this huge drive ... granted i'll never use all the space ... i like thinking and knowing that the space is there if i ever needed any space ...

so i'm countin' on everyone's help here to suggest other external hard drives (along with what GB you purchased or had) and their opinion and experience with that particular hard drives ... good and/or bad experience and reviews ...

would anyone suggest anything from western digital ... how about seagate ... any other brand that's reliable and does not have any problems ...

holla! and peace!

I don't know if you really want a 500 Gb...but I rotate "Fantom Titanium" external HDD's for a third-level backup at my small business. They have a metal (aluminum) case that dissipates heat very well so it doesn't require a fan...which makes them extremely quiet. I use 160 Gb drives, but I think they go up to 250 Gb (~$100). No complaints...check newegg.com if interested.

I have a Maxtor external 100 GB that I bought last year from Best Buy for around $75, the best I remember. Since that was a year ago, I am sure for that money you can get a bigger one.

Running XP Media Edition, it was pretty much plug and play.

I store all of my photos and iTunes song files on it.

So far I haven't had any issues with it, although I only use it once or twice a month when I backup my iTunes library and save some photos.

that's just it ... i really don't know if i'm ever gonna use up to 500GB ... but i want to have that feeling of i know that the space is available if i ever ever need it ... plus, i was comparing GBs and the 500GBs seems like the best buy for the price you pay vs other GBs (100,120,160,etc) ... basically, this is how i look at it ...

i'm just comparing prices from bestbuy.com so prices from somewhere else might be different ... for example, if i'm gonna get the 250 GB western digital external hard drive for 189.99 ... to get 2 external western digital hard drive for a total of 500 GB would be a total of $379.98 ... where 1 western digital 500GB external hard drive would only cost me $249.99 (on sale) (regularly: $329.99 which is still consider the better buy even at regular price ...)

am i going the right way of comparing how much i'm gonna get for my money ...

holla!

On a long enough time line, the survival rate for every hard drive drops to zero.

You could get 2 250 Gb Fantom Titaniums of newegg.com for a total of $200...and keep one in the box in your closet in case the first one fails or in case you actually use more than 250 Gb. that would be cheaper (and probably more reliable than the Best Buy alternatives).

Just ordered a 250 WD external from buy.com on sale...$99 and with google check out 79.99, with tax/shipping came to 87 bucks shipped.

small compact and reliable, heck get 2 for this price if you're worried about space... But in a few years things will get cheaper and larger anyways...

good luck!

I used to work for an adult company, and all our content came on HDD's. We used an external enclosure that attached via USB 2.0, and then just bought regular HDD's as needed. It was more versatile and a little less costly than the stand alone externals if you are going to be using more than one. Comp USA has them for $30ish plus the internal HDD you want.

Ding Ding Ding!!!

Forget external HD these days. Get some sort of Network Attached Storage (NAS), that way your entire network will have it accesible and as mentioned most contain print server abilities as well. I've got one hooked up to my network, and I love it! ;)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to insist on more detail.

I worked for an internet content provider. Basically, I was in charge of purchasing "content" (movies and pics), reviewing them, and then putting them in the correct format for our sites. At that point, webmasters would pay us to use our content in their sites. It was a middleman type company that paid well, and was run by my cousin. I worked there for about 2 years. So, in a nutshell, I got paid to watch porn.

Frankly, I've never been much of a "window shopper" so while that may be some guys' dream job, I don't think it would be mine. Plus, it had to get repetitive and boring after a while.

However, it HAD to be good for at least a few good stories! Spill it.

I've never had a problem with Lacie.

Yup, I've got a 250 gig lacie porsche design that I got off newegg or tigerdirect on sale. Has worked really well , although it does get warm during long transfers. But I've never had a problem.

I just carry a 1 gig around my neck and a 20 gig in my desk drawer. Bout the size of a credit card, and I have never managed to fill them up.

You obviously don't have much music on your pc

I have my entire CD collection on my PC in Apple Lossless format - this way a typical cd will only take up circa 300-400 MB storage and you don't loose any quality of the original wave format.

I got 1.500 original cd's and therefore I have two external 500 Mb harddrives each filled up to 60% of the total capacity.

Backup harddrives are a necessity, therefore I also have two internal 500GB harddrives, and these are both installed in the small PC I've built and connected to my HIFI system. It's really cool to have all my music in one giant juke box and NOT having to accept low quality Mp3 :drinks:
