Golf in Salem, OR

So I'm headed to Salem, OR on the 8th of March to see wife's family. last time I was there I got to play Salem golf club a couple of times. Hills are a welcome challenge after living in Charleston, SC.

 

Is it even worth taking the sticks? It looks like mid- 50's are a heat wave right now.

 

Advice? Thoughts?

Within about 45 minutes to an hour you have some great golf. But March is a cr@p shoot with weather but should be around high 50's low 60's. It's been pretty dry though so courses are in pretty good shape.

OGA can be a fun course, there's a butt load of really fun courses in Portland and Mallard Creek is about an hour or so south. If not soggy that course is a blast.

I second OGA in Woodburn. It's about 20 mins north of Salem. If you want to just stay in town and if its not too wet Salem Golf club is a great course. Also Mcnary is a great course if you don't mind hitting houses if you are wild off the tee.

hopefully the weather is nice when you head out there. One of the places I've played at is: [url="http://www.crosscreekgc.com/"]http://www.crosscreekgc.com/[/url] it is located west of salem not to far out. if it's not muddy it a pretty good challenge. salem golf club is pretty good as well. just a bit more spendy.

Of the afore mentioned courses, OGA is definitely going to give you everything you want in a golf course. You will have the hills you desire, just a great challenging layout and the greens always roll really good. Full clubhouse/restaurant and I think you will find the price comparable to Salem CC, which I would rate second of mentioned courses, very traditional course, reminds me of a poor mans Augusta. Since rain is very possible, OGA handles rain the best of the mentoned courses. I will throw out another a little north of OGA, Langdon Farms, (right next to I-5 in Aurora), some hills, good greens, good amenities, IMO rates just a bit easier than OGA, but still a good challenge. With luck you will get dry weather and enjoy some great NW golf.

You could day trip it to Bandon from Salem, it would probably be 3.5 - 4 hours depending on where in Salem. A long day, but it is worth it.

Salem GC is over priced for the area. Poor mans Augusta was a great comparison. Best driving range in the area.

No bar or food but the 20 min drive to cross creek is worth it. Oak knoll is tempting because of location but skip it and go 10 min more to cross creek play early and have wife pick up. Only 30 minutes from beach u can treat her to some clam chowder . Cross creek is west of Salem just to clarify above post.

If you must stay in Salem, Mcnary or Santiam are decent tracks.

If u are making an hour+ drive the Portland courses are in play but I would not go north of Langdon farms. OGA or Langdon a tossup.

Chehalem Glenn is a hilly course in newberg. Very accessible especially if in west Salem.

Head south to trystin tree in Corvallis, little farther but worth it is tokatee.

East is elkhorn. Will never play another course like this. In the hills target golf.

went out in 2009 and played at Mc Nary a few times and Salishan Golf club once.

Mc Nary reminded me of a course in FL with the way houses line the fairways and the price was right to play multiple times.

Salishan is on the coast, my brother in law has done work for them before so we were able to play out there for free.. nice course, but if willing to drive that far and can get logistcs worked out, try bandon
