Refinish of Oil Can Newport - 15 year gamer

A few years of neglect after I bought this led to a hack refinish, where I sanded off the rust and sprayed a clear coat on it. At the time, I sanded the rust off the face, which removed the mill marks on the heel and toe. It was sanded on a thick piece of glass to keep the face flat, and most of the mill marks remained in the center of the face.

 

The clear coat didn't hold up too well, wearing off all the edges and the top line. While searching refinishing options, I started reading all the DIY threads here and decided to give it a shot.

 

Since I do keep it covered, dents and scratches were minimal, so I only did some very minor and light file work. Followed by wet sanding with 400, 600, and 800 grit paper, and a wire cup brush in a dremel to clean out the cavity. I spent about 4 hours on prep work.

 

 

 

 

I decided on Birchwood Casey Plum Brown. So after the 800 grit sanding, I washed the head with soap and water and a toothbrush, and tossed it in the oven on 350° for 20 minutes. I pulled it out and brushed on the Plum Brown until it stopped sizzling. I then grabbed some steel wool and started buffing off the Plum Brown. I should have washed it first, as the thicker areas wouldn't buff out. I found that it cooled off too fast, and I missed two small spots, so I need another coat. I washed it again, and back in the oven. This time at 450° to give me a little more working time. One more quick coat, then I let it cool. Washed it good, and a light steel wool buffing.

 

 

 

 

 

For paint fill I went with Testors enamel paint markers, white and orange. I'm going to let the paint dry overnight, then I'll oil it up good tomorrow.

I'm going to throw a new YST shaft in it with a Winn grip.It's a gamer, and I'm not a purist.

 

While the sanding was quite tedious, I'm incredibly happy with the results. Now if I can just bring myself to maintain it.
