driver's face during setup and when behind the ball.

Hi guys,

 

I went from a square faced driver to my new callaway ft-3 with draw face. The question is, do I setup the drivers face square with the ball? The callaway has a draw face and is slightly closed. Do i address it the same or is the face supposed to be 1 degree closed right behind the ball. The reason I ask is that today i hit alot of power fades. Am I hitting it wrong?

I am currently trying the same club as a back-up, looking to go from a lazy fade to the elusive draw. As such, I set up to the ball with the face closed. I tend to focus on the position of shaft relative to the ball to avoid the desire to square the club. I know its mentally tough to keep from pressing the club to square position. However, if you're opening up the face to square you are already setting your hands up in a position to put a cut on the ball. You also may be compensating unintentionally for the closed face, maybe rolling your hands open at impact to square the face.

Face square to target... you could be coming over the top this usually is the cause of the power fades. I think the weight is in the heel of club to help the head turn over, as long as everything else is working.

Even if its a draw face that's closed, the face should be square at impact? Meaning if it purposely is closed, I should open the face so that it is squared? thank alot!

At impact the face should be square. I apologize if I confused you with my comment. I thought you were talking about how to set up at address when the club face is closed.

What I mean was, even if the driver is intentionally closed (draw face), I have to set up with the face aimed straight ?

Just to add that a closed face = more effective loft = less side spin = straighter shots. So you've got internal weighting, face angle and loft working in your favour. If you still hit that "power fade" then it's all you I'm afraid.

So your saying I should hit it with the closed face or hit it with the face squared? I just want to make sure I hit the club the way it was meant to be hit. thanks

I read in Tom Wishon's book "The search for the perfect golf club" that one should not open the face of a closed-faced driver to compensate for it!

 

They are meant to be adressed with a closed-face, but hit with face-square. Those drivers are built for people who leave the face open usually, so the closed-face angle is there to compensate for those tendencies.

 

But then again, you should hit the club the way it works best for you :drinks:.
