Refinishing My Studio Design

Need Tips...

I bought a studio design scotty cameron putter off of one of my friends because the gun blue finish had turned completely to rust so i went ahead and i coked it over night but when it came out it had a dark dullness to it. If any recommendations from this point, please help. Im looking for a pretty shiny look and i am wondering the best way to achive it...

I would make it an oil can, I did my studio 1.5 today after seeing stevey barney post in the clubmakers forum. It looks fantastic and I'm hoping to post pics tomorrow.

What is the easiest way of oil canning it??? I was trying to go for a sort of different look because i already have a studio design exactly like this one and it has a nice original black finish on it already so i was kind of trying to go in a different direction, but if this is easy and i like the results of yours i would deffinitely consider. please post some pics or PM me and tell me a little more about this.

Both were oilcan!!! :)

 

The SD #1 turned almost purple by itslef when I heated it with a bottle torch.... Circa didn't really change much in color with the heat.

 

I think it turned that dark due to composition of metal in the SD #1..... It was weird!!!

Well, I coked my Studio Design 2.5 first and then used metal and chrome polisher paste called Autosol to polish my putter:

As for the black finish :

 

1) Take an Gun Blue putter with an worn out finish.

 

The one on the picture had it's finish removed with Birchwood Casey blue and rust remover which was done in a matter of minutes.

 

Birchwood Casey blue and rust remover :

 

1. Clean and degrease with BC cleaner-degreaser and rinse with water (97% alcohol works just as wel)

 

2. Apply Blue and rust remover with saturated swab and allow to work for 2 minutes.

 

3. Polish lightly with small dampened pad of steel wool to remove old blueing and loosend rust.

 

4. Repeat step 1 and wipe dry

 

5. Brighten area with steel wool or abrasive cloth if the putter is to be blued or browned.

Now that the old finish is stripped :

 

1) Clean en rinse again.

2) apply blue with saturated swab or sponge.

3) Allow to work for 1 minute; rinse with cold water and wipe dry.

4) Polish lightly with 0001 steelwool

5) repeat steps 1-5 to obtain a darker blue

6) Saturate metal with Sheath Rust Preventive or Gun Oil. Allow to cure overnight for best results.

Ad some nice paintfills and a new Winn grip or something to your putter and you are ready to rule the greens again.

Anyone got any help on using autosol i seen the pic of the studio design up there and would like to use that finish, how did you do it? Just coke it then autosol? Is it just rubbing on and rubbing off?

Thanks for the advice guys...here are some pictures of my final product. The pictures are horrible and do it absolutely NO justice. Many of the marks that show up in the pictures are the lent off of my scotty cameron oiling rag. I am very pleased with this putter and it looks extremely clean. My friend is P.O. that he sold it to me.

 

Steps:

1. Soaked in coke for overnight

2. Steal wooled the putter to even out the finish

3. Buffed the putter with Blue Magic metal polish with a drill and buffing wheel

4. Sanded down some of the small dents and re-polished it

5. Heated the putter up twice with a blow torch and soaked it in diesel motor oil right after each time

6. Added my own paint fill

7. Put a nice coat of baby oil on it to give it a shine

8. Showed it off to all of my friends...!!!

Looks great! maybe I'll try the : dip it in oil trick sometime in the near future. It's nice having a old putter brought to live again, and putting in all the work yourself makes the reward even bigger.

Yep, that's it. First coke and then apply it rubbing with soft cloth and then polish it with other soft cloth. --> Repeat so many times as needed.

someone help. i paint filled my putter and it became a disaster. how did you do such a good paint fill?

Its Easy...Get some base color nail polish that is a cream rather than something with sparkles in it and just rub it on, no worry about being neat, just get the letters filled in nicely...let dry for about 10 minutes and take a paper towel with nail polish remover on it and rub over the surface. it is quick and easy and leaves a good coat of paint in the letters.

So my last step on refinishing my studio design above was to show it off to all of my friends and one of them traded me his brand new Studio Style 1.5 w/ steel insert and all for it. i think i need to start doing this more often!
