Critique Away!!!!! I need outside opinions and help. (Especially Monte)

Recommended Posts

Well as some of you know I am an assistant professional. I do a lot of lessons and have helped alot of people, but I can't seem to make my swing as consistently efficient as I would like or aesthetically pleasing. I play some pretty good golf most of the time. I play to about a +4 currently but I do my damage with long drives, wedge play, and putting. I miss hit a lot more shots than I would like. I am hoping that some of the gurus on this site can give me some insight on what to work on and the general +'s and -'s that they see in my swing. Thanks to everyone that comments.

+4... I wouldn't change much. I don't think aesthetics matters much if you're shooting in the 60's. Do you struggle with a slight hook, hits off the heel or occasional sh*nks?

No offense but I must admit when I read +4 I was expecting to see an "Adam Scott" or "Justin Rose" type swing. If your consistently shooting in the 60's with that swing I would leave well enough alone.

Thanks for all the great advice. I am trying to incorporate some of this into my golf swing. I had a revelation today. For the first time ever I started hitting shots with the ball much closer to my feet. I think my big misses and poor posture could have been due to reaching to far for the golf ball. I hit a ton of consistent and dead solid iron shots today by simply standing more upright and getting closer to the ball. This lowered my hands and made solid contact a breeze. Does this make sense?

Nope, not to me!

So do you think I was the correct distance away in the videos? I watched a lot of videos and can't find any pro who has the ball as far away as I do. Don't get me wrong I think everything you said made perfect sense and I worked on alot of those things today. You obviously know alot about the golf swing. If I had to make one move per week to improve my swing what would be the first step?

i don't believe your a +4 with this swing. There is more than one way, to get it done... i guess... Just by looking at the swing i would guess your about a 17 handicap or something.

It's not pretty that's for sure, but if you happen to be close I invite you and your wallet to find out if I'm a +4 or not.

IMO you can tell from the way you go after the ball that you aren't full of it. I don't doubt it at all, I also don't doubt you'd be hard pressed to keep that cap if you had to play from 160 yards out all day long, which is why you are posting I assume.

I know you are only asking swing gurus, but I looked long and hard and couldn't really come up with much to add. You do look like you are reaching a bit with the 9i, but then Arny looked like that didn't he? You lay the club off coming back, but that's typical of some good players I've seen with a strong low hand grip. If I was forced the say something, which I'm not but will anyhow lol, you look like you are on the edge of losing control, just not "centered" enough for lack of a better term, at least not when compared with known classic swings. It looks like a harder swing to execute than Adam Scott's for example.

I think you get the idea of what I'm looking for. My driver has behaved well this year and my wedges are always really good. Everything in between that is my problem to be honest. If my wedge game wasn't tour quality I wouldn't be better than scratch. I hit the ball a long way and chip and putt. That only works on certain courses. I don't play really tight courses as well as I feel I should. I would love to eliminate the big miss.

I am about to lose my mind... I am working on getting my club square at the top. I can do it in a practice swing, but as soon as I take the club back with a ball there I bow my wrist and the clubface points to the sky thus frustrating me further. I guess playing this way for the last 12 years makes it a hard habit to break...

just my opinion...

if your a +4, your obviously getting it done, and i wouldn't change a damn thing. aesthetics arent everything. i'm not quite at your level, i'm a mid single digit...and my swing is f'ing horrible, i mean ugly. i used to be a low single digit and decided i needed to change things to make my swing more appealing (I wanted it to look like it fit the scores i was shooting). I started playing horrible, for awhile, and quit playing for almost a year. when i got back at it, the only thing i really worked on was ballstriking, i dont care what the swing looks like, in fact, it makes it easier to sucker people into playing for money. I just wish i could putt :P

if you are a good ballstriker, and the ball goes where you want it to, i would just motor on...

Still working on some things. More swings to come soon. Also, I officially hate my swing after seeing it so much on video.

IO,

Has anything i told you helped ?

Yes actually. The biggest thing so far is not extending my arms and club so far. That has made a big difference in my posture and my misses. Thank you.

I would love to know what Monte thinks... I have been working on some of the stuff Lane has suggested and it seems to be paying off.

He may not show up. Kinda like Dustin Johnson's bowed wrist. Leave it alone. You have a unconventional swing but +4 is +4, right?

This is unconventional for starters. Club head is miles behind you.

That's the biggest thing I have been working to change. Don't really know how I got into it, but it has been hard to break that's for certain.

Ever see that vid of Monte standing completely upright and hitting a ball at waist high? Swing plane is level to the ground. Take a few swings standing bolt upright with the club moving on a horizontal plane. Should change the way you feel the plane and wrist set.

I should shut up now cause I'm not Monte but see if you can find that video.

I would go with less knee bend, more bend at waist/hips and a more thumbs up wrist action off the ball...And possibly closer to the ball. Your body will adjust to those changes pretty quickly and you won't have to work so hard to get the club to the ball.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.
