Gibsons of Kinghorn spoon?

Recommended Posts

Yet another vintage tidbit from the Niles Hoard. Either Gibson, gibbon, or Gisson of Kinghorn. Hopefully Styxman, Blade Junkie or anybody in the Isles or Europe can tell me about this club. I found it interesting because the sole plate was in the shape of an S, as in spoon. I suppose the other wood clubs had sole plates shaped like a D for driver B for brassie.

Anyway, brown Pyratone sh earthed steel shaft, no face insert. I am guessing circa 1930? The name "Gibson" seemed to ring a bell. But I am stuck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Uncle Bob

Sorry to disappoint our USA centric contributors, but as Tad will happily verify William Gibson of Kinghorn in the Kingdom of Fife, Bonnie Scotland was the largest and most innovative clubmaker in the world before WW2, and had a run from 1890 or so. Walter Hagen in particular was happy to be associated with this business.
D, B and S were indeed Driver, Brassie, Spoon, and I had one of these a year or two back, late 1930s is my guess on the date. It's interesting to note that 240 yards was considered a great drive (including run!) by my father's generation, mine too for that matter. Trust the marketing boys at Gibson's to trump that with a claimed 250 yarder.

Footnote: Tad's enterprise used to produce superb leather head covers with D,B,and S on them, which accurately reflected the way clubs were named in the day. A good hickory friend from Sweden gave me a set as a present, I was very lucky!

Found a Gibson driver at Habitat for Humanity this morning. In sad shape. Neck cracked, face a mess, crown faded, but looked like it had character so I thought I would restore its dignity by giving it a home. Going to turn it into a wall mount but not sure if I should spruce it up first or leave as is? Pros and cons?

William Gibson Company was the largest maker of golf clubs at one time. He started in 1892 in Edinburg. After his partner passed and the business had grown he moved around 1895 to Kinghorn. The company held a tournament in Kinghorn in the 20's that had a first prize larger then the Open. William Gibson passed in the early 20's I think. Hagen loved their clubs and played in their event and wrote several articles about the quality of Gibson clubs. The company made many Patent Clubs and these sole plates were patented. They made the clubs carrying the Jack White name. In 1953 the company closed for good. The War did them in. They even made Music Baton's during the war to keep their wood working people busy.
I feel they were the finest maker of clubs. They made the finest hickory shafts. Their early steel woods and irons were very good. A great company.
