Bandon mosquitoes

In case you haven't heard, there's a real problem with mosquitoes at the Bandon courses, apparently since mid-June or so. Just heard a radio report about it and it seems to stem from a marsh restoration project that the US Fish and Wildlife did nearby.

 

They are working on long and short term solutions, but if you're headed that way, bring lots of DEET!

I guess I lucked out then when I played in late March - don't think I saw any mosquitos then. Too bad there's a problem now :/

Wardonation, have you been there in the past week or so? We're going to be there next weekend. I called the resort today because I had to modify my reservation slightly and asked about this. The reservation agent I spoke with told me they have been working on the problem and it has improved significantly in the past week or two.

Can anyone give me some recent first hand info? Do I need to buy a couple cans of OFF before my trip?

I'm going to be out there next weekend as well. I've done some searching on the internet, and it looks like Bandon has sprayed insecticide. No word on how effective it has been, though. Would appreciate any responses from people who have recently returned.

Ran into the same thing at Tetherow a couple years back. Just had the bad luck to be playing during a hatch. It was brutal. Run from your cart to the tee, hit as fast as you can, then get back into the cart and get moving. The last four holes were just a blur.

Hope they have a handle on it, because it would really be a shame to have that happen at BD.

Update: Played the resort on Thursday and Friday. Mosquitoes not bad at all until sun starts to go down. At dusk, they start getting pretty bad. The resort is doing a lot of spraying, but it isn't much fun to still be on the course once it gets late in the day.

Is this a seasonal issue or permanent?

I will be there in mid November and have historically only worried about the wind and rain....

It's generally thought of as a rare fluke that will go away soon...

Has anyone played there in the past week? We are going this Thursday and are wondering what's it like now that they've started spraying.

I played in mid August and if the wind was up on Old Mac and Pacific they were non existent. Bandon Dunes had them if the wind calmed down and you were in the rough. Bandon Preserves was horrible in spots, due to the high grasses I imagine. Bandon Trails was pretty bad all over.

The staff was great and were handing out loads of spray. They sprayed Bandon Trails the morning I played and I don't believe it made much of an impact. With spray on... the bugs still swarm you but seem not to bite. Around sunset is the worst if you plan on being near the range and the wind dies.

I would still go regardless of bugs. At the time we were told that the lack of rain caused obsessive bug breeding, Wasn't informed of any marsh restoration causing the number of bugs. Hoping this is a fluke year and not a permeant thing. If not, golfers would have to get a petition to fill in the marsh!

Apparently there was a marsh that was created and it ended up becoming a massive breeding ground for them, and then Fish and Wildlife, the ones who pushed through the marsh, said they weren't going to deal with the excessive insects because it wasn't their problem. Everyone is pointing fingers at each other.
