Has anybody played these? What are the difference between the new Cobra CB forged and the old Cobra SS forged irons?

I'm looking to move out of my Taylor Made Firesoles into the cobra ss forged irons. Would these be good game improvement clubs? I shoot in the mid 80s.  Thanks for the advice.

I played the original SS Forged for about 2 years. ( Still have a set that I picked up as a spare), they are a good "players cavity design, with minimal offset, solid feel ( soft forging) and pretty easy to hit, trajectory is higher than some other players cavity irons. Although the K sole (I think that is waht they called it) looked weird, the darn thing sure worked well on all types of surfaces. These Irons recover realy well on thin hits, and the sole does a good job of minimizing fat/heavy strikes within reason. The newer Cobra forged dropped the effective K sole, and added quite a bit more offset, I don't think they have been recieved real well, with many players seeming to prefer the original design. I also think the new one may have a slightly bigger head shape overall. I'm a 10.8 index so we shoot somewhat similar scores. If you are at least a compitent iron player you should enjoy these a lot. They have earned a "sleeper/ clut classic" type status, and frankly were just not marketed worth a hoot so the general public has no idea about them. I am fortunate to have a set of 2-PW Custom ones with DG R400's in them that I picked up almost brand new and have been hanging on to as a back up set to my current Srixon I-302's.

SS forged, dynamite irons, I've got 3 sets. SS are in my opinion much better than the CB's, sole grind is the main reason. I'm a 5 and have hit just about every retail iron out there and the SS are still in the bag. Classy, long, forgiving, play just about any shot you want with them...and they can be had very cheap these days.

I played the SSs for a couple of years and was thrilled with them. They finally got so dinged up, bag worn, and groove flattened that I decided to move to the CBs. The differences are as follows: The SSs had a odd looking skid sole, 1/4 shorter than published lengths, used dynamic gold, used a tour velvet grip, had a fairly thin top line for a cavity back, and felt buttery soft (S30 carbon steel). The CBs have a more traditional looking sole, a slight change in cavity weighting, are the exact length as published, use sensicore dynamic gold, and a premium cord grip. When I bought them I was very excited because I looked at the 2-5 irons to see if the minimal offset remained. It did an might have been a little less than the SSs. Later in the day I couldn't believe my eyes as the 6, 7, 8 irons had noticeable more offset suddenly. It then went back to a very minimal offset in the 9 and P. I kept looking because I couldn't believe my eyes and the more I looked it appeared that the offset was only slightly more than the SSs but it looked much worse because they rolled the leading edge back to the hosel giving the impression that it had more offset than it did. After discussing it with Cobra I was told that was the new design that they had worked with their forger on (which told me they picked a standard head from this forger and didn't request a constant offset like they had with the SSs). Often times the Japanese designers have used a reverse offset philopsophy where the scoring irons actually have more offset than the longer irons. This didn't seem to be the case as only the 6, 7, 8 had the problem. I also discussed the appearance and site posted number on these irons (which is obviously in error as they claim to have less offset than any of the Titleist blades do---put them down at address and you see that the Cobra specs are not to be believed) with the people at Cobra and all I could get out of them was that was the design for this year (and next as well). I suppose I could have put up with the strange look of the mid irons if they irons had felt the same, but even though they were the same metal they felt harder than my SSs. I don't know if the metal formulation or the cavity redesign had any impact, I sure the offset appearance didn't but they just weren't as nice an iron as the SSs. To that end I traded them in on my Titleist 735.CMs three weeks ago and bought my brother's unused set of SSs from him. I am in the process of putting project X shafts in them which should be the softest of all worlds. I couldn't find anyone else with any other opinions because the CB set I bought was the only set this store had and their demo set as well. They were in prestine shape as hardly anyone had demoed them but sadly they aren't the same iron as the SSs at least in this set I got. I also asked Cobra if this was an odd set in relation to the mid irons and maybe another had the less offset of the SSs and they said no that was production. I had them about 6 weeks but they never really measured up to the SSs. I have read where other people really like them but I haven't found anyone that went from the SSs to the CBs that thought they were an improvement although upon a cursive inspection they appeared to be better in all areas.

The only irons that have replaced the SS in my bag are a set of MP32 that I got cheap. I still use the 2 iron because it is great. I think the SS is better then the TM 300 and the newer version of the Forged CB. If you can get the SS I would go that route.

On a side note the above posts are fantastic. Great info guys.

The SS's's were a great club...they never really did well at retail. They were going for $99 a stick when they were new, and I thought they were worth it as these things go. To be able to get a set on the cheap now is a real blessing, they're a real good find :clapping:
