Kilmarnock Barassie - Belleisle

We've narrowed down and mostly reserved the "name" courses we want to play in the Ayrshire area this summer, so that work is really done and decisions made.

I see an opportunity to have some fun and play a comp on one of these courses on an "off" day and at a nice rate. ;-)

Both have their appeal for a lot of reasons, and I've read about those.

Have any residents or visitors had any experience on either of these courses they are willing to share? Other courses are not under consideration in the context of that particular day.

Thanks!

I've played an Open competition at Barassie and will be playing it again at the end of May this year.

I really like it, i actually enquired about joining it this year but there was a joining fee at the time and that factored in with having to commute from Glasgow to play every week meant i didn't follow through. Its quite tough, reflected in the Standard Scratch but fair.

If you are travelling by train the train station is almost on the first tee which is a bonus.

I have yet to play Belleisle so cant compare unfortunately but if you book Barassie you would have a good time i am sure.

I'm in the camp that really likes Barassie, I have played it twice in the last few years and its definitely my favourite between WG/GG and KB. Like most of the top courses in that area the greens and fairway are always immaculate. I also find the clubhouse VERY welcoming.

First 3 holes are pretty brutal but there is plenty of variety.

Belleisle I last played in 2017. I cant say wholeheartedly I enjoyed it as I thought some parts of the course were a bit untidy but it was early in the season. The greens were reasonable but nowhere near the standard of KB at the same time of year. Value for money you couldn't complain tho. I would have liked to have seen it last year when we had such a glorious summer as I suspect it would be better.

Enjoy it!

Thanks for the responses!

Immaculate fairways and greens are always on the plus side of the ledger!

Some others on here have related the fun they had playing some comps over there, so I'm going to play a "Gents" the first Sunday we are there while we are in the Troon area and the next Saturday my wife and I are already signed up for a mixed greensomes at Winterfield when we are in North Berwick. Should be a lot of fun.

I think Barassie is tremendously underrated, Its a course that doesn't get the plaudits it deserves. Would I play Barassie or Bellisle? Barassie every day of the week and twice on a Sunday. Barassie has a selection of great holes and I personally believe that the par 3 4th is as good a par 3 as any in Ayrshire, including the Postage Stamp and the 7th at Western Gailes which always feature when talking about great holes in Ayrshire.

Friendly clubhouse, good facilities good course. Yip a lot to love about Barassie.

Friendly clubhouse is an understatement! Had a great time there, course in great shape, greens in great condition, fellow competitors a lot of fun. Some good walks between holes so plenty of exercise. Almost couldn’t have played worse on the front 9, lol, but found my game finally 2 1/2 rounds into the trip on the back 9 and it’s hung on through Prestwick and Royal Troon. Pro at Kilmarnock used to be at West Kilbride where we played two days before - amazing views everywhere on that course, loved it. Barassie is well removed from the sea, but great turf and some pretty interesting holes - liked it a lot.

I love how we all have our own preferences and opinions which is what makes forums work and fun places to be. I do find it incredible that you can rate Barassie higher than Western and Glasgow Gailes but as I say I respect your opinion. For me the other two are a class above it. Barassie for me is a better course than West Kilbride but not as nice a location. 4th hole at Barassie is the most underrated par 3 in Ayrshire, its a tremendous golf hole.
