Searching for a new iron shaft

I have been playing PX LZ 6.0 in my 785/Z Forged combo for a little over a year now. I have had some really good results with them but also some really bad ones. I would classify myself as more of a "hitter" than a "swinger", and my miss with the irons is high, right, and spinny. I don't know my 6/7 iron swing speed, but driver was around 110 on Trackman in my fitting about a month ago. I was thinking about going Modus 120, but don't know if i need to go X or S flex. Also thought about going Dynamic Gold, or DG120, but was uncertain of flex there also. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My driver SS is right at about 110 as well. I play the Modus 120X and have tested a lot of shafts, I always end up back with the modus 120. To me, the 120X feels smoother than S300, PX 6.0, other shafts that are considered stiff.

if you’re swinging a 6 iron around 90+ mph I think you’d have no problem with the 120X. If you’re in the 80s, the 120S may be a better fit.

There is no standards for flex labels, they are only a address inn that model and weight series, they are useless for compare of different models.

MODUS 120 X is among the softest shafts on the marked with the label X, and even if butt CPM is just as useless for compare of different models, Modus 120 X is a full flex softer than DG S300, but the weak mid and upper tip section makes it feel even softer. Both MODUS 125 S and MODUS 130 R is stronger than MODUS 120 X, even MODUS 105 X is about 1 full flex stronger than 120 X, so dont use flex labels for compare of different models, they are useless for that.

We should chose shafts first by WEIGHT, then find a profile that match our swing, then go softer or stronger within that model so both feel and dispersion becomes right. Ball flight is a head and loft matter.

If you have issues with PX LZ, then MODUS 120 series is NOT for you. the EI profile looks like a extreme version of PX LZ where the "load zone" is even more pronounced, so if you want to try of Modus in the same weight range, then 125 is where you should look. Flex is mostly a feel matter, do NOT compare different models by flex labels, they are useless for that, just like im writing above here. That player plays MODUS 120 X, but its not stronger than PX LZ 6.0.

Again, if PX LZ causes dispersion issues, those type of profiles is not for you, and MODUS 120 is the extreme version of PX LZ. Look at DG 120 and Modus 125, both with the S label as starting points, but real life testing is always needed.

Here is the EI profile of MODUS 120 compared to PX LZ

image.pngHere is MODUS 125 vs DG 120 / Non of them has this soft mid section, or "load zone", but is more linear ending in a stiff tip section.

Wow I didn't know it the flex of the Modus 120 was that extreme, but it doesn't surprise me. When I tried the PX LZ 6.5 that was probably my second favorite shaft in terms of feel and dispersion, so it seems that my swing really gets along with that bend profile.

Stick to the profile that feels right and work for your swing

i DONT have the full EI profile as CPM numbers, but those numbers ive got looks like this, where the GREY fields is butt section when cut to play lenght, the the other is TIP side, so we dont get to see the weak spot of Modus 120, that zone is not part of my DB. ive marked the 120 model with BOLD.

image.png

PROJECT X LZ looks like this as compare. Here it becomes visible that PX LZ 5.5 is stiffer than MODUS 120 S, so MODUS 120 is very soft compared to its flex label.

I dont have specs for LZ 6.0, but it should be in the middle of 5.5 and 6.5

image.pngAdding the classic Dynamic Gold models as reference, but the profiles is far off each other, so this numbers for butt and tip dont tell the full story, but PX LZ 6.5 is weaker than DG S300

Wow, so much excellent information here Howard. Thank you! I do enjoy the feel of the LZ, just tend to lose it to the right when I try to go after one. I may give the 6.5 a try before moving to another profile all together. Thanks!

Before you jump, try to add 5 grams of lead tape spread out in head to grip direction from the middle of the shafts. That will simulate the 5 grams up in shaft weight that comes "on the bargain" going from 6.0 to 6.5. If that feels good and works good, you might try 6.5 LZ, but if the feel becomes heavy, i suggest you try the standard PX 6.0, but soft stepped once to keep weight down, and to reduce the feel difference from LZ 6.0 to standard 6.0

Here is the Ei profiles compared. LZ is simply a more "curvy version" of the standard model.

image.pngAgain i dont have the full EI profiles in CPMs, but standard vs LZ looks like this: Pay attantion to DEFLECTION, its the old fashion way to measure flex (how much the shaft tip drops due to a certain load). Deflection of LZ 6.5 is equal to deflection of standard 5.5, so i expect your LZ 6.0 to be in the area of the standard 5.0 as deflection (about 2.500)

PX 6.0 SS1 would LOOSE about 1.6 grams, so we can say they are 118.5 grams as "comparable weight" as uncut, and it will still be a tad stronger than LZ 6.5 with a "less curvy" profile, so even standard 5.5 will make it if 5 grams lower shaft weight was wanted.

Stay away from Modus 120 if you don't like PX LZ.

I would try the standard PX Rifle 6.0 or even 6.5 or just DG X100s. At 110mph driver CHS you should have no issues loading them and they are very good shafts for "hitters" of the ball.

I'm a "hitter" like you and tested Modus 120 TX vs. PX6.5 and X100s and couldn't even touch the sweet spot with Modus while flushing the other 2. Ended up in X100s but would have been happy with PX6.5.
