Ball Compression

With the colder weather of Autumn approaching here in the Midwest, I was wondering where the breaking points for ball compression fall. 50 degrees or 60 degrees? I am a 100mph guy who likes Pro v1x, but am concerned with lower temps coming. For a lower compression I like the Srixon Z star. What do you guys think?

The ProV1x and the Z star are nearly identical compression wise. The lowest compression tour balls are B330S(75) B330RX(65), and B330RXS(64). Temperature wise I think the low to mid 40's is where you have to be before it becomes an issue.

Those are all core compressions you listed. The thread below has overall compression ratings by golfballselector.com:

http://www.golfwrx.c..._1#entry2428332

Overall compression for the ProV1x is around 104 and the ZStar is around 90. I have also found that balls with multiple mantle layers tend to feel harder at colder temperatures than 2 or 3-piece balls with similar compression ratings.

If you are worried about compressing the golf ball then the core compression is the number you need to look at. Whether the cover makes the ball feel harder is different, core compression is key.

I would agree with you if you were just hitting a one piece core with no other layers.

The mantle layer is generally the hardest part of a ball and designed to resist deformation of the balls initial shape upon impact. A thick, harder mantle will cause the ball to keep its form more and thus compress the core less than a thin, softer mantle. Each layer added to a ball decreases your ability to effectively compress the core.

Wow.

Looking at the data from that chart in the thread that is linked to this one the Nike Tour D is listed at a compression average of 100 however they, Nike, claim the compression is 80? The chart also claims the TP Black LDP is 120? Something is awry . . . or the data needs to be taken lightly.

A manufacturer is trying to sell you on their ball when listing statistics. Golfballselector.com is a neutral 3rd party and the data is used for resource purposes. If you don't buy into the actual numbers, use it as a reference to compare balls since all the balls tested are in the same environment with the ball being the only variable.

Taylor Made, Bridgestone, and Nike list core compression. You will notice that compression numbers are not listed on the actual box. It is really only listed on press releases or interviews with engineers.

Yes the TM Black LDP is one of the highest compression balls mainly due to its extremely hard mantle layer which helps with short iron spin while still having a durable cover. Don't let the overall compression number fool you as I find it to be one of the longest balls I have ever hit and my swing speed is only in the high 90's.

Callaway and Titleist don't even mention compression. Srixon is the only company that accurately lists overall compression and their findings are fairly close if not right on with golfballselector.com.

With all of this talk about compression, keep in mind that it is not as important with solid, multi layer balls as it was with wound balls 15-20 years ago. I recommend that the data is used as a reference but nothing beats trying a ball out for yourself.

I doubt that is real. A hard outer layer would shatter to pieces with that type of compression.
