refinishing a putter's topline

Does anyone know the best method for refinishing a topline of a putter? or best way to get nicks and dings out of it?

Ive used a dremel with sanding drum, various grade grit papers or a fine file. Go light first of all, as vast amounts of damage can be done if you go all guns blazing.

What tools do you have available to you?

nothing out of the ordinary, but i do have a dremel. how bad does the sanding affect the finish?

i think rb7 used what he calls a "body dolly," which is some type of tool used in removing dings and dents from cars. if htere's not a lot of damage, a flat file, some sandpaper, and some time can really do a lot of good. i'd be careful wtih that dremmel--you can do A LOT of damage very quickly.

That's what I meant about going easy first, once your confident with the dremel it's a great tool.

For me Sandpaper, elbow grease and most important patience. Think about it you'll be staring right at it when your trying to knock down that birdie putt. So take your time, have fun and reep the rewards.

I refinished the top line of my used pro platinum with a set of files and a lot of time. Once it was close, I used a scouring pad and finished it off a bit.

It isn't perfect, but it makes a great backup.

I suggest you get two "fine" metal files. One about 1/2 inch wide and one about 1 inch wide. With these you can carefully remove the metal that is raised. Next get a "sanding" block. This will hold the emery paper tight and let you smooth the radius and topline areas. I use fine emery cloth or paper to do this as i do not want to be to aggressive cutting the metal. If your head has a plating you will remove that or most of it i would think. Take your time but you will be pleased with this method. Tad

If it is a carbon steel putter with a plated or oxide finish, the sanding and buffing will likely remove the finish.
