Well,

What's your opinion?  I have seen both but, get nervous when thinking about using a chiro for neck adjustments.  Heard lots of horror stories.  Massage therapy seems like a much safer option but, probably take longer to get you back to normal...

I've got friends going to both. Both work. Go the a reputable sourse and you can go either way. Chiros can do more with the electric stim machines.

  • 2 months later...

I agree with JB and offer some recent experience--learn from my mistakes! Last week I did some yard work, pulled quite a few weeds. Played later that day, starting stiffening up, got worse the next day, better day after and complete pain the fourth day until I could barely get out of bed. So off I went to my sports masseuse who has greatly helped me in the past. It was the worst move I could have made. The body, as I have since learned, will "self splint" when injured. Massaging away all those tight muscles surrounding my lower back trauma meant that I had no support and excruiciating nerve pain. I limped to a chiroprator (who explained much of this), got adjusted, taped so as to limit extension of my lower back, and was able to walk out of his office 45 minutes later. I'm still in pain, but it's getting better each day. Since I'm also being treated for tendonitis in both elbows (it's a b**** being 49 sometimes), I asked my physical therapist for her opinion as well. She said that in PT school, they learned most backs will get better with rest in two weeks, regardless of treatment. Therefore, my efforts may, at best, do nothing more than slightly accelerate my recovery.

My conclusions:

1) Chiropractors are helpful, especially in getting the musclo-skeletal issues in the right place(s) for recovery

2) Something got them there in the first place, whether it was trauma or, more likely, the culmulative effects of bad body use

3) If you have body issues and you want them resolved long-term, then my best advice is to find out why you suffered the symptons of bad use (i.e. sitting in an office chair; using your lower back to lift instead of hips and glutes; not exercising both sides of the body--and that might be the most important thing I've mentioned in the unilateral game we play; compensating for a lack of flexibility with over-rotation of other body parts...the list goes on

4) Enter into a three-pronged program, ideally. Chiropractic, massage, and exercise, done in the proper order.

Long winded but really close to all this stuff right now. I usually play three times a week, every week, and taking two weeks off is killing me!

I would use the best of both chiropractic and massage therapy. Find a Chiropractor and Massage therapist that have received positive comments from their clients.

“Rolfing” is highly specific and effective form of structural bodywork and may not be for everyone.

I have found that massage can be more then just temporary relief.

Best of luck in your search…

Yours in Health,

JB aka SportMassage
