True Spec Fitting Columbus

Sorry if this goes on and I seem to ramble but I went yesterday evening for an iron fitting at True Spec in Columbus. They are located on the grounds of Brookside Country Club just off of West Dublin-Granville Road. I was surprised to see that they were operating out of what appeared to once be a garage near the range, especially after seeing images of some of their other locations. But the inside was nicely layed out, and I would be hitting off of a mat out on to the range. They had heat going so it was pleasant even with the bay door open. They also had loft and lie machines as well as swing weight scales to check clubs.

I am currently playing Callaway Apex Pro 14s 5-PW and Apex 14 in a 4 iron, all with KBS Tour V shafts. They are standard in length and lie. I'd never been fitted before and have always been a bit skeptical as I couldn't figure what they'd tell me I didn't already know. I'm 6'1 with a WTF of 38.5" so I was pretty confident I needed longer clubs, but I'd tried it previously by putting extensions in clubs and I started hitting a lot of fat shots and converted back to standard pretty quickly. My fitter proceeded to explain how Trackman was setup and how to interpret some of the numbers. I warmed up with my clubs, with him recording each hit to get an idea of how I was swinging. I've always played Callaway clubs because that's what I started with and felt some type of brand loyalty, but I'd already decided that I was going to be open to whatever clubs they suggested since part of their pitch is that they are brand agnostic and prefer to fit someone in to what gives them the best results. We started with a 1/2" over stock shaft to see what kind of results that provided. It didn't take more than a handful of swings before he changed to a full inch over stock. I tried shafts from KBS, Project X, and Nippon Modus, each in different weights. I had the most success with the Modus Tour 105 and then began trying different heads. True Spec has a unique attachment system where they can easily interchange the heads and the shafts quickly. I experimented with a couple Callaway heads, Ping, Taylormade, and Mizuno. I kept coming back to the Callaway X-Forged head. I was able to really deliver the club consistently and it felt the best of all of them. To be honest, it almost felt like playing a video game it was so easy. I kept waiting for a bad shot to show up, but it just didn't. It didn't hurt that my dispersion tightened up and I gained about 8 yards in distance. They were also able to quickly change grips with a compressor to try different sizes.

The whole fitting lasted about an hour and 15 minutes, and at the end I was shown what they call their prescription for my irons, but you're not committed to purchase through them. The iron fitting itself is $125, but I'll not get in to cost specifics for the clubs themselves but you definitely pay a premium for them to control every aspect of the club's build. After the horror stories I've heard of some builds coming from manufacturers such as swing weight being all over the place or loft and lie being off, it's a bit relaxing to know the quality control on these will be beyond reproach, especially since they guarantee the clubs and if I have issues I can bring them in and they'll make it right. Some people may think it's not worth the cost, and that's fine. To each their own. The downside of all this is it removes any excuse I might otherwise have for a bad shot.

If you're in the market for new irons, and this is an investment of something you'll be playing for the next 5 or 6 years, it's more than worth it to buy through them. But if you are someone who changes irons every year, it might not be the best value. Either way, I do highly recommend their fitting service.

What is the additional cost per club for them to actually do the build?

Really is dependent upon what all you want them to do to the club. You can opt to have them do more or less depending on preferences. It might be $50 per club on up to over $100 especially if you're having the shafts spined and refinishing the heads.

Who fit you? I got fit for a driver shaft a few weeks ago with chad. He was awesome and super knowledgeable, would definitely recommend him for a fitting. The fitting was well worth the money but the up-charge on their equipment and building I couldn't agree with.

I was fit by Scott, and met Chad briefly. When it comes time to replace the driver, I think I'll definitely be going back for a fitting at least. And the communication after the fact has been excellent.

I did an iron fitting with them at Kinsale a few years ago. I'm ready to go back for a driver fitting. Do you think they will be able to hit out of the bay on the range all winter?

I'm not sure why they wouldn't be able to unless you've got snow blowing directly in to the bay. Like I said before, they have a heater running over top that should be enough to keep you warm. But if it were blustery and very cold, I can see it being uncomfortable.

Do you know Chad's last name? If it's the Chad I'm thinking he use to be out at New Albany CC with the Taylormade Performance Center.

Evans I believe. Bigger dude, knew his stuff and was great to talk to. He mentioned he was one of first fitting guys with PXG when they initially got into the business.
