PAR Competition - Love it or Hate It

Rod Hill

Recommended Posts

At my local Club ( Flagstaff Hill Golf Club, Adelaide, South Australia, www.fhgc.com.au ), we are struggling with numbers on a Saturday when the competition for the day is PAR. It just seems to polarise our Members - they either love playing a PAR Comp or they hate it - there seems to be no middle ground. It is getting to the point where I believe our Match Committee will start to phase this type of competition out of the program, which would be a real shame.

Is this just a local issue or is it a global trend?

We play a game called "points" game.

Take your handicap and subtract it from 36. That number is your number or "points" you need to get.

Par = 2

Bogey = 1

Double = 0

Birdie = 3

Right now I can't remember what the points are for eagle on up. ( I think 5 and 8 )

You add up your foursomes points needed.

If everyone is a six then they need 30 points each.

At the end of the round each team adds up their points. The team that beat their points needed wins. Or is closet to their total.

We usually did a front, back and total. It is a fun game but as a low single digit you need to play perfect every time out. Or make several birdies and hope for some skins and your partner beat their number.

I don't know much about handicaps in Australia, but in the USGA system we expect to play to our handicap around 20% to 25% of the time. As I understand the format, you're essentially playing a "net match" against par, with your score being the number of holes you finish ahead or behind. That would suggest that most players in a Par format would have scores in the negative, would lose by some amount. What are the complaints from the players, is it the score itself that they don't like? IT might be a little demoralizing when you essentially "lose" most of the time.

Serious question...please don't shoot me.

We have a group of 12 guys with a season long competition and are always looking for ways to improve out competition. One fault I find with this is we have a guy with the USGA max index of 36.4 and sometimes with slope adjustments, he's in the 40's. How do you run the competition in that environment?
