Palm Springs in October

I already have a trip planned for late October to Palm Spring, my golf trip buddies also have a golf trip planned for San Diego the same weekend and I am trying to convince them to go to Palm Springs instead. One of the guys said he has heard it is not a good time for Palm Springs because most courses are over-seeding. Can anyone confirms this?

I spend a lot of time in Rancho Mirage and haven't faced that problem, mostly because I am never there in October. However, many of the best courses in the desert overseed and some even shut-down starting in September and October through parts of November, in preparation for the coming Season. Keep in mind, it depends on which courses you hope to play.

I went in October a couple of years ago. The resorts with multiple courses stagger their overseed schedule to keep at least one course open, so you'll have some options but likely be playing in end-of-summer conditions.

Have a look at greenskeeper.org for a detailed list of maintenance schedules. They should start updating with overseed schedules in September.

I usually go in early Nov and havent had a problem playing. Yes there are courses that are closed due to overseeding. You can find out on their websites when they plan to overseed. We usually play at Desert Willow since they have two course so one is always open and they dont have cart path only after seeding. I know courses like PGA West is path only after the overseed.

What is your experience playing Desert Willow after they re-open for overseeding? Thinking about heading out there in late October to play Firecliff

Desert Willow scalped Firecliff over the past couple of days and they are getting it ready for the winter grass. When it reopens on Oct 25, there will be thin spots on the fairways and the greens will be a little slow but it'll be playable. You should also know that Mountain View doesn't close until Nov 11 so both courses will be open for 2-1/2 weeks. I think Palm Desert makes a killing in that period with both courses open while a lot of other courses in the area are closed.

Here's a shot I took off of my deck showing the current condition. That's FC #5 tee box in the foreground and the #4 fairway and green in the distance.cx244y5dzpdq.jpg

Headed to Palm Springs on 10/5 and will be there through the 12th. Right now I have Indian Wells , LaQuinta Mountain course and Desert Willow Mountain View booked. May play more when I get there as well just depends on what the wife wants to do.
