Oil Extractors

I’m getting tired of jacking up my cars to change the oil. So, I’m thinking about buying either a 12 volt oil extractor or the vacuum type extractor. Anyone have any experience with either of them? Looking for good and bad reviews.

I recommend buying ramps instead of jacking it up. Much easier and generally gives more clearance for maneuvering around under the vehicle. I’ve got some Saturday and fairly inexpensive plastic ones I’ve had for several years. They’re heavy duty enough for my truck, and it makes life much easier.

 

I have no knowledge of oil extractors, but I can’t imagine how they could actually get all of the old oil out.

I’d second the wide plastic ones from autozone or The like. Extremely strong compared to metal ones and much lighter to move around.

Thanks for the responses. I had thought of the ramps, but I also have plastics skirts under the entire motor. It’s kind of time consuming and a pain to take off all of those torx screws. The debate to get the extractor continues.

Problem in my opinion with an extractor is that it can never get out as much oil as draining it. Most pans have a small sump around the plug that would hold at least a half quart , and some cars like the fox body mustang have dual sump pans to clear the cross member. The front sump is where the oil pump lives and the pickup runs to the rear sump. Has a drain plug for both sumps.

 

then there’s the question of filter. Where is it located ? Some newer cars like Mercedes V12 etc have a canister filter up top. But most are on the underside. If you don’t change the filter You may as well not change the oil.

im a 18 year shop owner of high performance cars , and I consider the oil change shops who use the suction extractors to be close to scam artists. But then again manufacturers suggest 7-9k mile intervals for oil changes now , and in my own tests 3k is still my recommendation if you plan to keeP the vehicle and don’t want to pass on issues to the next person. So I’m admittedly very biased by what my own eyes have seen over the years.

Mike it would be very easy to put a oil drain hose kit on it. This happens in the construction industry all the time. You can cut a hole in the skirt. Drag the hose out and tuck it back up when you’re done.
