Nike One Vapor vs. Titleist NXT Tour

Sorry if its already been done...
I have a slow swing speed (especially compared to the guys on this site) in the high 80s, and after playing premium balls (like any amateur thinking he's better than he actually is) like the ProV1 and Penta, I've decided to start saving money. I started to think after playing a just for fun 18 holes with my dad with a Nike PD Long, and my score was really only a few strokes higher than normal. I'm about a 10 HDCP (working on creating a real one) and I am a fairly straight hitter (no banana slice issues or anything like that). What I need is the extra distance I'm missing with balls built for guys 30 mph faster than me, but the spin that allows me to at least hop and stop my short irons and have decent stopping power with the short game.

I've mostly narrowed it down to these two after some research. I know the B330 RX sound good, but I dont want to spend the 40 bucks needed. In your experiences or knowledge, which ball is longer, which has more spin, and add in all those other characteristics in a ball (feel, etc).

i'm a fan of the nike one tour d and taylormade tp black balls for distance and good green spin

lostgolfballs.com has trial packs that include these balls, might be a good way to test them out

i tried out the vapor and wasn't a big fan, it didn't seem to do distance or spin very well

I have a high swing speed but cant afford premium balls so I use the Bridgestone e7, its a cheap alternative for high swing speed players. So the e5 or e6 could be really good for you, I believe the e5 is meant to be higher launch and the e6 for straighter flight. Anyway all 3 have a nice soft feel. I think they sell for around $25

I agree with the e5-e7 line, depending on your ball flight. Since your straight ball hitter, skip the e6. The e7 is a low launch ball and e5 for those who need to get it up.

Don't be afraid to try some others. I think the Top-Flight Gamer V.2 is a tough ball to beat for the dollar.

Go to all the major ball makers web sites and use their ball finder dohickies.

For example, I plugged in what I could gleem from your post into Srixon's ball finder and it suggested the
Srixon AD333 which looks to be on sale for $18!! I have played it but with my 108 mph driver SS it felt mushy. I did love them off the wedge,

Check out Wilson's ball slelector (The $30 FG is an amazing ball) plus they have several old and new balls out there that cant be beat. I just bought 3 dozen of their 50 Elites for $11 each!!! This would be a good ball since its a low compression ball.

I think my main point is to check out each manufacturer website and play with their ball finder and the check your shopping sites for pricing.

Work from there and don't be afraid to steep outside the box. I shouldn't be playing the Wilson 50 Elite.

Now, if you want a REAL STEAL. Go to your nearest Sports Authority and buy their 24 pack of Wilson TRUE balls, I have seen them on sale for $12.50 and reg price is $19.99 (for 24 balls). Best ball for the money. They are not junk. Just a solid two piece ball. My wife plays them and she has a sub 80 SS and they launch for her. Also check out Walmart and buy a 24 pack of Wilson Smart Cores ($14.99!!). Same deal with the Wilson Trues. The core resiliency "supposedly" generates more power the harder you hit it. I play with them all the time on new courses or super tight courses.

Good luck.

Top flite Gamer if you're going on price. The ball is worth the $16.99 that you can find them for at target.

But if you're option is only those 2 balls, I'd say Vapor.

Back to the OP, I've played both the NXT Tour and Vapor. Honest answer? If you blacked out the markings on them, I don't know if I could tell the difference. They are both "compromise" balls - they drive decent, spin ok, and are a true middle between two piece balls and tour balls. If I had to pick one, it's the Vapor, though I couldn't give you a decent reason why.

This being said, if you're a slow swinger, maybe the Titleist So/Lo or the Srixon AD333 aren't bad balls to look at either. But yes, the Top Flite Gamer is a super ball - last year's was actually a better spinning ball, though less durable. They also had an awesome "springy" feel off the club, and were super cheap.

The Top-Flite Freak has crazy distance, but not soft enough and not enough spin around the greens. Another couple of good low compression ball would be the Noodle+ or Nike PD Soft, and both are fairly soft. I love the Titleist NXT Tour, however, my current favorite cheap ball would be the Top-Flite Gamer or Callaway HX Hotbite. Good luck!

The B-Stone E5 is great. It has a 2-piece ball construction with a (spin creating) urethane cover. I would be playing them if I wasn't getting ProV1x's for 25 bux(same price as the E5) a dozen.

I'm a mid-cap senior who isn't afraid to try out different golf balls from time to time. Between the Vapor and NXT Tour, I'd go with Vapor hands-down, but that's personal preference vs professional golf ball engineering knowledge. To me, it's softer, lighter, flies straighter and holds the greens better than the NXT Tour. The Vapor costs a bit more, doesn't it (unless you buy two boxes, then they get very inexpensive). I want to try the Vapor Speed, which advertises a softer, faster ball. I'd like that.

Again, what I like doesn't mean a lot to you, so by all means play both -- and others. Titleist balls aren't popular without good reason.

I've never played any of the NXT's enough to know how their overall performance is. They just feel like hitting a rock on the few shots I've played with them. Last year's Vapor was a decent ball. This year's Vapor Speed, I thought I liked, until today. It's a good ball on a soft course. If you're trying to stop any kind of a shot on a firm green, forget it. No spin around the greens, keep in mind I typically play One Tour (D)/Pro V1(x)/B330(S). I'm ready to use the rest of my Vapor Speeds as "water balls".

 • 2 weeks later...

Today I tried out the Nike Vapor Speed and the Titleist NXT Tour (2010 model). I found the NXT to be longer and softer than the Speed. The Speed was about one club short on my irons. Also, I was able to stop the NXT better than the Speed.

Id say im in the same boat. Ive been using the vapor speed for months and theyve been great. I switched it up a couple of weeks ago and picked up some TM Burner TP's (2 doz for $40) and they play a lot like the vapors. Great balls and the price is right for a 3 piece ball. I think you should give them a try.
