tungsten powder help!

hey you guys,

I recently picked up a SC studio stainless newport beach. However it is too long and i am looking to cut it down by 2". I prefer to add tungsten powder down the shaft to balance the club. I want to know how you go about the whole process of adding the powder as I am clueless to the situation. What steps did u take, and what do you suggest to a newb like me?

It's pretty easy but personally I've never liked this method very much. I've always felt that it made putters, irons or whatever feel a little "heel" heavy. It might be more mental then anything but I prefer just adding lead tape.

First remove the grip, and add powder down the shaft till you have the swing/head weight you're looking to achieving. Then when you have it right, shove a cork down the shaft with a rod till it's packed tight.

I tend to agree with the above as it might throw off the balance of the putter.

Lead tape to the bottom of the putter or something along that line would work fine.

If the big cheese Scotty Cameron loaded up Tadd Fujikawa's putter with lead tape on the bottom vs ramming some powder and a cork....I'd imagine it was with some purpose.

On other clubs I think the powder method would be fine, but putters I'm not as sure about...

Don't use weight down the shaft if you can help it. It will raise the center of gravity of your putter an unacceptable amount. Add weight with lead tape to the bottom. Golfsmith now sells 1 inch wide lead tape (I'm sure there are others but most lead tape sold is 1/2 inch wide). A 1 inch wide strip of tape the length of the sole will give you 7 to 8 grams of weight. I've got 2 strips on some of my putters and it gives me about 15 total grams. It does not look bad either.

thanks for the help guys. I think I'll just stick with good ol' lead tape on this one. So i'm guessing that using one strip of 1/2" lead tape across the sole will only add 3-4 grams?

It depends on what lead tape you use. I get 1/2 inch tape from GolfWorks and that is 2 grams per 4.5 inches (which is about the length of the sole of a putter). However, the Golfsmith lead tape I recently bought is a little thicker, so it runs 7.5 grams per 4.5 inches, or if you cut it in half, about 3.25 grams.

If you are going to use this putter regularly, I highly recommend going to golfsmith.com and getting the 1 inch tape--it looks 100% better.

If you decide you can't stand having as much lead tape on the bottom as you would need to get the desired headweight, you can add a little weight to the shaft. I would keep it at 6 grams or less. That shouldn't change much at all to the balance. However, adding 20 grams would.
