Publics Schools...What Aren't They Telling Us????

Hey, hoping i can get some experts to help me on this

I know as students in public schools, we have rights. Unfortunatly, the facility doesnt seem to want to inform us of our rights. I had a really good 8th grade english teacher and she told us all about our rights as a student, that staff never tell us! i remember some of it being kinda shocking, but i cant remember it.

So wondering if anyone has an expert knowledge on this, so that we know our rights!!!

I dont know about all of you, but we have a stundent handbook, which is like a rule book really. It basically tells us everything we can, and cannot do. Though some of the things, are hard to understand. You have to do whatever a staff member says as long as it is within reason, or you are punished. But how do we know what is in reason? And free speech... PFFFTTTTTT we can say some 4 letter words... and then be hung practically... (cool)

 

though i would love to see what these rules are... and what were some of the things your teacher told you?

Actually you check a lot of "rights" at the door when you enter school. A lot of issues going back to Columbine regarding school safety. Since the majority of students in a high school are under 18, the school may act in loco parentis.

Generally, speech is protected so long as it's not disruptive to the educational mission of the school.

 

For example, you can wear a black armband protesting the war in Iraq, but you can't wear a t-shirt promoting illegal drug use.

 

If what you want to do can be viewed by school administrators as tending to interfere with the school's legitimate educational objectives, then they can restrict your activity and/or punish you for violating the rules.

But there is no diffenition for "interfering, or objecting the educational process" really it is just the opinion of whoever is in charge of the school. In one school a kid could probably wear a NO WAR t-shirt and be fine, and another kid at a different school could be sent home... thats where i think it can be unfair...

I remember as a senior (I was 18 and a tax payer for the city - I had a job...paid taxes) we had to go to school board meetings. They were discussing something (don't remember now...but it was "important" back then) and I put in to speak. They called my name, I stood up and a board member said "Wait...you are a senior, yes?" "Yes sir." "Then you need to sit down and be quiet." "Sir, I'm 18 and a tax payer. I believe I have the right to speak." "If you don't want suspended for insubordination, you'll sit down and be quiet."

 

...we were always told we have no rights, period.
