My weekend in Kansas City

Went down to KC for the Chiefs/Vikings game and got a chance to play some courses I haven't played before (being from Iowa). I played Stone Canyon on Saturday and Winter Stone on Sunday. Winter Stone was by far the better course in my opinion. I found it to be very playable and it was in great condition. I love the Zoysia fairways and I didn't have a bad lie all day. Stone Canyon was average. It definitely wasn't as scenic as Winter Stone. I've been able to play five public courses in the KC area, Winter Stone, Stone Canyon, Shoal Creek, Dubs Dread and Falcon Lakes.

I would rank those:

1. Shoal Creek

2. Winter Stone

3. Falcon Lakes

4. Stone Canyon

5. Dubs Dread

 

Thoughts on other courses I need to play when I make it back down? I would like to try and get on at Staley Farms. Seems like it would be a fun course.

I would throw Tiffany Greens in there as well as Creekmoor down in Raymore. I would agree that WinterStone is a great course. I love Stone Canyon as well but they just aren't keeping the condition up. I actually played it today and was disappointed. When it's in good shape, it's one of the best in town. Tiffany Greens is pretty much always in great shape. Creekmoor is also always in great shape and is one of my faves in the area. I had a fitness membership to Staley last year that allowed me to play on Mondays and while it's an ok course, it's just not on par with the others mentioned above IMO. The greens are a bit too extreme and that is exaggerated even more by their tendency to place around half of the pins way too close to the edges of the greens. Can get frustrating to slightly mishit your shot and be punished for it, but if you're into that kind of thing you might enjoy it.

Yes I agree that the condition of Stone Canyon was definitely not very good. For $60+ a round I expected better.

Yes definitely Tiffany Greens. I used to play Tiffany and Shoal a lot. Both good courses.

too bad about Stone Canyon. I could see they were suffering financially a little bit when i played there this spring, but the greens were still in good shape and overall i thought it wasn't poorly conditioned at all. i really liked the course. i've played falcon lakes quite a few times and i'm surprised you ranked it above stone canyon....i like FL and all...but i just thought SC had more interesting holes.

i kinda like dubs dread too. it has some history, is an old-school style course, and i like that back patio atmosphere. i always enjoy playing there.

i also really like tiffany greens up on the northern side of town. creekmoore i didn't care for that much. felt like somebody just took a bulldozer and flattened everything out there then grew some grass. i think there's one tree on the whole course?

I agree with ranking SC above FL. Are you sure you're talking about Creekmoor? There are quite a few holes where elevation comes into play and I know there are a lot more trees as I've ended up near many of them

yes....i for sure played creekmoore. i felt like i was just out in the middle of an old cornfield. of course i played it the day i flew back from pinehurst after spending 4 days there....so my perception was a bit skewed at the time.

for where i lived in OP it was just so far to creekmoore and i didn't think it was all that great.....though it seems many disagree with me.
