Hi, thought I'd finally start posting as I have a few questions.

 

The main one for now is based around new irons. Started playing a couple of years ago and I've gone from old second hand set to newer second hand set. My handicap has always stayed at the higher end of the spectrum and I've decided now is the time for a new set.

 

I've been looking at and have been recommended the Taylor Made speedblade. Just wanted a few general opinions from various forums, everything I've researched has been good so far but magazine reviewers aren't your regular golfers.

The SpeedBlade is a good choice, as is anything in the Ping "G" family of clubs.

Regarding the irons, the best advice that I would give is to go to a shop and take a look at what they have, pick a few that suit your eye, hit them, preferably off of grass, and with the help of and qualified employee or Pro/Asst. Pro, pick the right iron and shaft for YOU.

All of the OEMs out there have rock solid equipment for your level, which I am assuming is a GI type iron so it comes down to what looks and performs the best for YOU.

I too want to tip the cap to you Northern Man. Its always good to welcome new folks. There sure are lots of good opinions and sharing over in the equipment forum you will no doubt enjoy.

Picking out clubs for me was at first a little tricky -- didn't know who or what to believe and I just figured that when the right sticks were in my hands and looked good to my eye I would know it. Well I did what you're doing... started looking around for opinions and tried to wade through all the news and opinions. Like Richard said above, there are usually good pros and fitters around -- those demo days at the golf courses such to help you through it. AND to Richard's point the shaft is just so important.

I finally got a little lucky in that the guy giving me lessons happen to have a variety of clubs with different lies, lofts, shafts -- and during the period he was giving me lessons he was also trying different things out on me -- so I get two bangs for the buck in a way... my swing was improving and decisions about the right sticks for me were starting to gel as well. So I knew exactly what to shop for after a few lessons and then it was just a matter of finding the best deal.
