Turnover Rate for Club Makers

Recommended Posts

How fast can a quality club maker alter a whole set?
What is the standard turnover rate for club makers to build, lie adjust, shorten, and regrip a set of forged irons and a couple of wedges?

How fast would the fastest time be? How long could it take?

Also, I understand that all club makers are not built the same, but would you consider some to be lazy? To think of all the regrippings, shortening of shafts, etc. Do they just get sick of it?

As a customer, I hate waiting, especially when I'm told that the adjustments would be done "in two days", but it's already been weeks.

2-5 days, in response to the lazy questions: I think there are some lazy club makers, just as there are in any profession, but I think it all comes down to professionalism, if you tell someone something will be done x day it should be done that day or earlier, unless something unforseen happens of which you should inform the customer

Do you want them done, or done right?

I can stick and glue using 5 minute Tour Van epoxy and the whole set can be ready in an hour.

Your swingweights will not be consistent.

Your angles will be +-1°

Your lengths will be +- 1/4"

Your grips may not be aligned perfectly

Your frequency slope will look like a mountain range.

Or I can take my time, spine the shafts, blueprint the heads, mill the weight plugs to .1g for accuracy, get the angles to +-0.25°, and have an actual linear slope on the frequency chart.

The latter takes time and money. And, like a poster above noted, you may not be the only customer.

If you really can't stand to wait, learn to do it yourself. It takes patience, attention to detail, and the desire to make sure that the club that you want to build isn't a half-@ssed piece of crap. You will have nobody to blame but yourself, and they will be completed at your pace.

I swear, everyone's a laymen preacher to some degree.

I would suggest that you take them to a different clubmaker if you are dissatisfied with your current one. If you are sick of waiting for them, pick them up without any services being performed (so you don't have to pay him) and take them elsewhere. If the guy wants your business, he'll speak to you when you come to get them. And then you can complain to him directly instead of whining about it here. If you were promised two days, hold him to it. Why are you waiting two weeks? Pick up your sticks and let your money do the talking.

Try a big box store like GG or Golfsmith. I hear nothing but praise for their wonderful quality. :drinks:

Again, if there are no other clubmakers in your area and you are sick of your current guy, do it yourself. Outside of buying a good loft/lie machine, which involves a large expense, everything else on your task list can be done by most people at home. Make a quick order for some parts and do it yourself.
