Maybe it's just the honeymoon...

Recommended Posts

So last weekend, as a bunch of you have read, I purchased an old bullseye flange for $5, and the wife proceeded to say (jokingly) that she was going to check with my league partners whether or not I used it. So I warmed up with it on the practice green and figured i couldn't put much worse than i have been so i decided to give it a go for all 9. At the end of the evening I was more than pleased with my putting from 25ft and in. The heft of the putter is great and the feel when you hit it on the button is great. I have to say i like the feel on all shots better than my Ping mallet. I ended up with 18 putts exactly, had two 1 putts and two 3 putts (3 putts coming from pitiful lagging from over 60ft). Hopefully the tread continues to the better as i get more rounds in with it and the greens speed up this summer...

You know, if my wife checked up on if I used a $5 putter or not with my playing partners, I think I'd be changing more than the putter.

One of the inescapable consequences of clubs that are more forgiving is the resulting trade off of feel, whether you're talking woods, irons, or putters. So its not surprising that you are getting more and better feedback from the bullseye with the tiny sweet spot vs the Ping mallet with the huge one.

At some point its easy to get frustrated with the negative feedback from mishits and that's when we instinctively reach for something less harsh. But the brain needs that feedback in order to improve. The lack of feedback often leads to sloppiness. So embrace those mishits, they're trying to tell you something.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

I've been using the old Bullseye for a few rounds now. Got a birdie (from 6 or 7 feet) today, but made a couple three putts. I've been keeping my hands in front of the putter head, making the putter a little tilted at address. Seems to facilitate swinging through the ball.

When hit solidly, I can feel the feedback. A relatively level backswing and follow through is essential. Unfortunately, I can't remember to do that every putt.

Back when I was a young pup, I couldn't break 100 if it meant my life. But in a nine hole work league, I'd win low putts almost every week, with 14 or 15 putts, still scoring 50+. If I broke 50, I'd feel like Arnie or Jack.

If I could putt like I did forty years ago, I'd be playing par golf.

Oh well.

i'm only 5'8 and the putter is 35" at least so i'm thinking about cutting it down a couple inches...i already grip down a good bit already and the old grip is pretty shot...

I'd be cautious with that!

I had a 35" Mizuno Bettinardi that I took 1.5" off and changed the grip. It never had the same balance after that.
Scooter with that old Bullseye if that happens he could throw him about 3 grams of lead tape low in the back and be ok. Those Bettinardi putters are sopiscated and are balanced several ways and I could see that throwing one of those off. But those old solid blade putters are like a 55 Chevy not too complicated and easy to fix. I know a guy that got into that counterbalancing thing 6 months or so ago wanted to do the thing with a BB-55. Man I messed with that thing counterbalancing and recounterbalancing until my eyes watered. Finally told him to get rid of that damn thing and get him a Ping or Cameron and we would go from there. We put it back stock luckily I shot the grip off and sold it on fleabay. He ended up buying a Cameron of some type I forget which one to be specific but it was factory counterbalanced and he likes it. Some of the new stuff I do not understand but the old stuff now I can work with that

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
