Weighting the grip area of clubs including putters

Local clubmaker swears by it, what do you think?

A local clubmaker in my city swears by putting weight in the grip area of clubs, as opposed to the butt of the club which is backweighting. He's been around for 30 years or so and was an engineer. He says he can build a set of clubs in which every club will feel identical if you were to swing blindfolded standing above the ground (so length is not an issue).

His theory is that to make consistent swings there should be more weight in the hand area of the clubs. This will definitely increase the dead weight of the club. I tried it for putting and it felt good, in fact I had an old putter with lots of tape and a very heavy grip which I used to love. So I went ahead and had him put some weight (70 grams) in the hand area (5" down the shaft) of my putter. He says he puts a cork down the shaft, then melts some lead, pours it down, then puts another cork.

Anybody else hear of this? Does it work? Are there limitations? He also says swingweight means absolutely nothing.

that is really old. the golden bear has written that he used to put lead tape under the grip. its called back weighting and it kinda is like a buggy whip thing. i have put two strips of lead tape on the butt end of the club since the early 90's. i only do the driver though.
