Last Tournament for Valhalla?

taking any bias against the course out of my opinion, probably, though not definitively ... it's a major, and regardless of any opinion on the pga, it will always be a major and will never be replaced by the players (everyone is familiar with the history of the term 'major'; no need to rehash that) ... so it's an 'event', as lynch alluded to in his article recently ... valhalla can host 'events' ... big property/etc ... so probably, since it's no longer pga-owned, but not necessarily ... ideally, the pga and usga would have 5-8 courses with subair greens that allows them to control the firmness with a great deal of precision, and enough room to lengthen the course at will ... distance is absolutely a factor, or should be when desired ... the ability for a course to co-exist as a pro event/major with the public players/membership players is increasingly difficult with the chase for new drivers/balls/etc ...

I think there’s a bit of overreaction here. As per Scottie’s interview he was processed quickly and everyone bar the arresting office was nice and helpful. Unfortunately there’s one power mad officer at the centre of this, no need to tarnish a whole place due to one village idiot. Every town and city has them.

My heart goes out to the family of the person that died, but in those instances of weather with that many people it does happen where someone gets injured or killed. They need a good review of what happened and how to prevent it again. Was the shuttle driver driving too fast for the conditions? I know nothing about the actual accident.

The course has produced a good leaderboard, so providing the situation with Scottie doesn’t become daft such as the police defending that one officer, and they do a thorough investigation into how someone died and make improvements then I see no reason why not.

Don’t know about infrastructure around the venue but the course, as a TV experience is not the best, Oak Hill last year was able to give an exciting TV experience despite long par fours in a forest. As for Valhalla, There are some enjoyable holes earier but the finish is totally bland.  Only excitement is if guys hit their tee shots into the rough left on 15 and 16.

After completion of the tournament, I suspect the owners of Valhalla along with local authorities will discuss how to improve entering and leaving the complex so a situation that occurred will never happen again. the PGA of America loves coming to Valhalla whether it be for the championship or a future Ryder Cup.

We must never forget Bob May almost won a major here.

That's not really a bad thing IMO.  If May had outdueled Tiger in 2000 when Tiger was playing superhuman golf, that would've been well earned.  None of the other top flight players that tournament could battle Woods.

I mean, Shaun Micheel won his only PGA event at the 2003 PGA at Oak Hills.  Does that mean its a bad course?

I don't think what happened the other day will have any impact on whether another PGA is held there.  The PGAoA sold the course, which is a far bigger factor than any of it.  Unless there was a clause, which I have no idea how it is to be enforced, that any future PGA Championship is held rent free, they aren't going to go there.  If they are paying someone to use their golf course, there are a bunch of better options.  And don't forget the May dates now.  Louisville isn't horrible in May, but it can still be a bit dicey.  You are basically at about the dividing line of locations the switch to May essentially disqualified.

Frisco will be seeing a disproportionate share of future championships in my mind.

There just aren't enough good holes and green complexes. The game has passed it by. The "signature" hole is emblematic: island green is gimmicky and the tee shot uninteresting.

I don’t see it coming back, but not bc of the events on Friday. Since the PGA sold its interests, I don’t see Vahalla having enough “cache” on name alone to warrant a return. While I think this has produced a great leaderboard, the course is a bit ridiculous…

Agreed completely.

I’d love to see the PGA zag and take the Championship international. Unfortunately, it’s not happening with the long list of upcoming dates, but I wish it was something they would consider.

Agreed 100%. Been saying this for a long time ...every other year they could have played outside US in conjunction with the PGA of the host country. What a great way to differentiate themselves, grow the game overseas and display other classic courses in countries like Australia, Japan, Ireland and Canada.

Well, it's called The PGA of AMERICA, so going outside the US of A seems problematic.

As for Valhalla, it seems an odd duck of a course. Very '80s in style, a Nicklaus design when that meant something, but one which never seemed to have anything memorable about it except for soggy conditions and lots of length. It is also hard to understand why and how they have never improved the infrastructure to access the place better after so many years. I never understood what the bosses at the PGA of America saw in it at the time nor why they decided to buy into the place. Now that they've moved their presence to the metropolis of Frisco, TX and sold off their interests in KY, I expect we will not see them come near the place again, especially after this week's events.

Agree to disagree here - if the mission of the PGAA is to grow the game, what a better way than to showcase the best players than to play on some of the worlds best courses. 🤷‍♂️

Not a great course IMO. Very artificial looking and lacking character.

Oh, it's got character all right.  That of a cheap laughing clown putt-putt course (cue a Krusty the Klown giggle)  I had apparently repressed my memory of 13, but you guys weren't kidding.  At least move the tee up today and let the guys shoot at the green on the tee shot if they want.

They could have used it to get a head start on LIV. But a combination of greed, lack of imagination, and selfishness because PGAA wants the opportunity to have 20 club pros get in 2 rounds and miss the cut by 15 shots in a major.
