Garmin S2 vs Bushnell Neo XS

Recommended Posts

Looking for a quick comparison of these two. I like the look of both and from what I can tell the S2 doesn't have hazards and the XS does. S2 also has the layup feature and direct distance to pin I believe. Any one have thoughts?

Both are very good and both have advantages over the other.

Advantage Garmin:
- True yardage to the near and far edge of the green from your position relative to the green, even from the side. If you play on courses that have huge sprawling greens with multiple approach angles this can be a big advantage. The Neo-XS only gives the distance to a fixed front and back of the green as approached from the center of the fairway regardless of where your standing.

- Score keeping on the S2. Not on Neo XS.

- Bulk map database updates. Whereas Neo XS you can only update 1 course at a time.

- Layup arcs on the garmin. But this is really simple math in your head, so I don't see it as a material advantage.

Advantage Neo XS:
- Neo XS is going to give you up to 4 hazards per hole and the Garmin isn't going to give you anything. This is really nice on unfamiliar courses so you'll know about the creek running through the middle of the fairway, especially when you can't see it!

- Battery life on the Neo XS is 12 hours whereas the Garmin 8 hours.

- Map updates are very fast. I had to have a couple courses corrected and I was notified they were ready to download in less than 5 days! Garmin I think does quarterly updates. Not sure how fast they actually turn around requests.

Neither allows you to move the pin.

Hope this helps.

So let me ask, is there a watch that has both hazard information but also has yardage relative to you current position and not a fixed front, middle, back?

Not familiar with any,at least none that have such consistently strong customer reviews as the neo or s2.

Also just so you know, the center distance is the same for either, since the center is the same fixed point regardless of approach angle.

I think my concern would be where I was for instance pin high right or left but was short sided, id like to know the distance to the front edge of the green form the angle I was hitting from and vice versa if the pin was cut on the opposite edge of the green. If understand you correctly the S2 will achieve this?

Yes the s2 is going to give you near and far edge relative to where you're standing. If you value that info more than hazards then the s2 is a great option.

I really don't know anyone that dislikes either the garmin or Bushnell, but the distinctions we discussed are important to understand.

Hopefully I was helpful.

You definitely were as I would not have known the difference in regards to the dynamic distances. The lack of hazards is going to make it a tough decision though. Guess I just have to figure out which is more important. I feel though that yardage to pin regardless of location in the end is more important to me than distances to hazards...... I think haha

Be careful because neither is giving you distance to the pin. Neither has the option to allow the pin to be moved and nor does either graphically depict the green.

Another option to give you best of all world's is to get the neo-xs for hazards and an inexpensive laser for pin distance when needed. I bought a Callaway 300 and it's great.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
