Starting My Own Firm...

Exciting but Scary

To those of you who know me here from my postings on Counselor's Corner or from my efforts to bring Philly area and South Jersey area Golfwrx'ers together for seasonal outings I am pleased to announce that I am stepping out from 'The Firm' and starting my own legal practice.

Working for 'The Firm', I was afforded absolutely zero choice in which types of cases I would work on. I quickly became bored and disinterested with what I was doing. I decided to start my own general practice firm so that I can have greater flexibility in the matters I choose to handle, such as: criminal defense (everything from traffic related offenses, to DUI, to felony defense); personal civil litigation; commercial litigation; and family practice including wills.

Its so exciting starting up a practice that occasionally I forget how terrifying it is to have to bring in your own clients. At 'The Firm', clients and cases were always lined up for me. But now its like living in a nature channel special: I only eat what I kill.

This is surely going to negatively impact my golf... until I line up some clients, I can't afford to play much. However, hopefully it will all be worth it very shortly.

I'm sure you'll do just fine, seems like you have enough knowledge and experience to make it on your own.

Definintely not easy being in business for yourself, but knowing your trade well, which I'm sure you do, is half the battle.

Congratulations and best of luck! I am also stifling and a large firm (in DC) and seriously considering going out on my own. So far the terror of the unknown is holding me back. But I'm glad to see someone else taking the plunge. It gives me hope.

My golf came has severly suffered since I went out on my own over 6 months ago, International Trade business. Its not only time, but $$$, as everything gets pumped into th biz.

 

Good luck....... to bad you dont practice international law..... always looking for a good lawyer for that.

I know what you mean...I am not eating just to save $$$. Running a business is expensive.

 

As for time, well I'm in court in the mornings to late afternoons and I'm always connected to phone, email, etc. so, if I can afford greens fees, I should be able to get lots of twilight rounds in.

 

And no, I do not practice international law, but I do represent small to mid-sized businesses in nation wide commercial litigation matters so if you have any needs in that arena I encourage you to call.

Congrats and good luck! Owning a biz is stress full, but once you get the wheel turning there is nothing better than being your own boss, trust me later on you will be able to golf when you want to.

Congratulations and good luck in your solo venture. I wish you as much future success as I hope to have when I sit for the Massachusetts Bar on July 25 and 26. This bar studying has really interfered with my golf game. Best of luck.
