i'm a student in high school but i work at a fish and chip shop :dntknw:

6 months of the year I'm a test rider for Polaris---I get to push prototype snowmobiles and ATV's to the limit and crash at very high speeds so you, the consumer, are assured of a safe, exhilarating riding experience. :)

 

The other 6 months of the year I'm an industrial maintenance mechanic/millwright for Polaris---working on the machines that build the machines I ride later.

 

Pay sucks, but it's fun. :wave:

 

The pay sucks as a millwright? That's a very demanding job; welding, machining, electronics, hydraulics/pneumatics, mechanic etc...

 

Ask for a raise!

Don't get me wrong the pay is decent, but in this area (upper midwest) jobs are notoriously low on the pay scale. Cost of living used to balance it out, but lately it's becoming as expensive to live here as it was back home (western Washington), and I could easily increase my salary 25% by moving back home.

 

The 'fun factor' of the riding sort of makes up for it, and hopefully I'll get on in a year-round capacity in a year or two.....openings in that department rarely come up--I got on strictly by accident--and the future benefits of such experience far outweigh anything I could do with my other profession, so here it sit......cold....lonely.....cold......single.........cold.....LOL

 

Seriously though, my job is more 'cool' than 'financially rewarding' but I'm young & have lots of time left for a high-paying desk job. :cheesy:

I can sympathise with you regarding regional pay scales. Ottawa is mainly gov. workers and IT. So naturally the pay for machinists sucks. And only say, 10-15% of shops in the area will even offer you an apprenticeship. Right now I could make more money hanging up drywall. I'm going to need a rich wife.

 

Just an FYI, North Carolina (Raliegh) and New York are where the money is for machinists and millwrights.

It really sucks when it's a beautiful day, I look out my office widow overlooking one of the courses, and I see people playing while I'm stuck working...It's the worst kind of torture!!!

 

I know that feeling!! My office overlooks the fairway of the 10th hole on the course next door. At least I can walk to the practice facility at lunch :cheesy:

One of the great aspects of golf is no matter what you do for a living, who your are, what race, religion or anything else, everyone can play golf and enjoy the game for what it is meant to be....... a relaxing sport.

 

sure most of us cannot afford to play the real expensive courses or play custom clubs but there are courses and clubs for every budget. What a great game. I've met some of the nicest people in the world thru golf.

 

Thank God for golf and thanks you to all the members of Golfwrx for making this the greatest site around.

All you welders and Machinest should come to Alberta, we have no good tradesmen left and alot of jobs that need to be filled...pay is farily high up here and most shops give away a prize for all new employees (trips, quads, cash) down side is you only get a few months of really good golf up here
