Allied Golf Corp woods

Recommended Posts

I never heard about this manufacturer until a couple of older, late 30s, early 40s, woods landed on my doorstep. I'll post some photos when they are more presentable.

First, anyone have any knowledge of this American brand.

Second, I thought someone had crushed the shafts in a vise until I looked closely. They are stepless but have a pronounced spine to the rear when fitted. I don't think these are salvageable and there is no label, but they look interesting. Defo. non-conforming in todays rules. Anyone know anything about these, they must be made in the USA.

My interest is the look of the clubs, a 2 and a 3 wood. They have deeper faces than other period clubs seen in the UK and would be interesting to put into a playable 40s set. The heads have no hook on them and sit just right for me. The grips are nice too, leather wrap with that Wilson style reminder cutaway in the butt, also non-conforming.

Sort of suits me, the non-conforming bit! :)

There was an Allied Golf Company in Chicago Illinois I think from about the
1930s to maybe 1970s.

I remember doing research on them about 10 years ago - I had a set of their
late 30s to early 40s woods that I sold on ebay. If I remember correctly,
they were stamped AGC in an "ornate" script style.

I might still have pics of them somewhere......

Agreed, remember them as a low end Chicago golf company. My recollection of them is that they were a mass marketer, a la Delta. A small step below Northwestern in the '70s/80's. Sorry, no idea what they were before that time.

I can't provide a photo of the shaft, which has a pronounced spine to the rear, and therefore isn't round in cross section. I would have guessed it was more expensive to make this shaft than a round cross section stepless one.
Johnny J Roberts has his name on the crown....who he??
Otherwise here is what it looks like.

Don't say I didn't warn you, its a bit of a slapper but should scrub up nicely.

I can't really give much information on Allied, but some years ago, I bought five old clubs in a charity sale for $5. These included an old set of three Spalding RTJ pyratone woods (which I stripped earlier this summer), two pyratone irons, an RTJ 4 iron, and an Allied 2 iron.

The Allied 2 iron had an odd muscle back with an indented middle, with a dot pattern face. I hit it a few times, seemed like it was damaged in some way, had an odd clunk on impact. Don't recall any other marking other than a three point shamrock on the back. There were other markings, though. I gave the club away a couple years ago.

I think I did look it up, it was American. Your club should clean up nicely.

Enjoy!

Back in the 70s, a friend of mine had a 60s era Allied 5 wood with "Johnny Roberts" on the crown.

I can't find the article, but I remember reading that at one time it was common practice by the lower end companies to put names on their golf clubs that sounded like they could belong to golf professionals, but could just as easily have been the name of the company accountant or the family's milkman. It was a way to create a signature model without having to compensate an actual pro. Northwestern sold thousands of clubs with the name "Bob Hagey" but I can't find if there ever actually was a pro named Bob Hagey. Northwestern didn't start its tour staff until 1960. Northwestern would sell an iron that said "Autograph Model" on the back and put the professional's name on the ferrule. Three of my first irons in 1973 said "Jackie Pung" on the ferrule. I only used them for a year, but it was some time later that I found out Jackie Pung was a lady professional and those were ladies clubs!

Chicago was truly a haven for lower end golf companies. According to The Golfworks' 4th edition of their ID and price guide, Allied was purchased by Northwestern in 1996.

Dubow was another one. The friend I mentioned above had a Dubow 7 and 9 iron and the signature on the back was "Ray Lewis." Those were some tiny clubheads and he used to hit some terrible hosel rockets with that nine iron.

An earlier post mentioned Delta, and I believe they may still be in business.

My family founded that company. It was previously named Raffel Manufacturing Company and it was founded in 1898. They originally made toys and bikes.
