Byron Putters

Feedback/thoughts would be appreciated

I've been doing some research in the forums on some of the custom putter makers, and one that caught my eye in particular were the ones made by Byron Morgan.

There have been some threads on this, but does anyone have any information about the quality of materials, crafstmanship and customer service of Byron putters? Is there anything that makes them stand out among the other offerings out there? Any tour use?

What are you looking for in terms of your custom putter?

 

What did you like that caught your eye from Byron?

 

Byron Morgan is a great guy and a superb putter maker. The quality of the materials is first rate (Byron's production line are CNC-milled in one-piece from in 11L17 carbon steel, solid tellurium copper billet, and 303 stainless, then hand finished. Byron's handmades are made from 1018 carbon steel).

 

The craftsmanship and service you will get from Byron is top notch, but there are also other excellent custom putter makers who also provide great service and their own designs (David Mills, Dave Billings, Slighter, Palombi, et al.).

 

With custom putters it's all about fitting you with a unique and personal putter that inspires confidence and works for you. IMHO, judging a custom putter based on Tour use is really irrelevant (although Byron and Mills and Billings have had tour players play and win with their putters).

 

I will leave it to others to say what makes them stand out.

Wow, thanks. For one thing, I really liked the milling on the face (I think it's called twilight zone?) - to my eye, it's really unique and oozes "cool." I also liked what appeared to be a thicker topline on some designs.

 

You're right - custom putters are all about personal preference, and there are a lot of makers out there to choose from. I am fairly certain I'm going to pull the trigger on a custom putter shortly - it's a matter of narrowing the choices down at this point.

 

Do you know offhand if Byron allows customers to stop by his shop in Huntington Beach, or offer fitting sessions?

The twilight zone milling is a Byron original. The putter faces are dead flat to the touch and the milling provides that holographic ripple pattern when you angle and tilt it to catch the light. At address the pattern is not visible. Each one comes out a bit different.

 

Customers are welcome to visit Byron at his shop, but please call him first and make an appointment. Byron does not offer fitting sessions per se but I'm sure he could fit you the old fashioned way: by watching you putt.

What makes Byron stand out? Tuff one. You are seeing a ton of great putters coming out from some great smaller designers, right now. The ones that Drew mentioned are all great, in their own way. I agree that if there is something about Byron's designs that caught your eye, that is a huge step toward finding the putter that you crave. It is such a personal thing, that initial reaction is a HUGE part of putting a winner in your bag.

Quality? Well, I have owned no less than 20 of Byron's putters, including those from his days as John Byron Putters. I have never once found anything less than the utmost quality from his creations. His milling has always been excellent, only to be better on the 007 that now sits in the bag. His handmade putters are second to none and right on par with the biggest of names in the game. I have rolled a ton of putters, both tour and retail, and Byron is as good as it gets in this arena.

Customer service? Byron, for a long time was a one-man show. He handled every aspect and never let me down on a custom order, special need or anything of the sort. You know that if you have a question, Byron himself will be available, usually to deal with it and get things worked out.

Finish and Product?

Well, as I said above, I am over 20 and counting and keep going back. Some of the biggest collectors in golf have at least one Byron in their house, that is a good sign. You won't go wrong with any of the makers that Drew listed, but if the Byron caught your eye, that is the way that I would go.

He is "just a guy who lives at the beach and makes putters". Bill Vogeney told me that once and it could not be more true. He is one of the truly Good Guys in golf, today.

Investigate more and you will find more of the same.

Thanks for the great info; 20 putters of any one brand is a great testimonial in itself (owning 20 putters of any brand is impressive.)

 

I've also noticed a similar theme throughout this thread and in others that Byron Morgan is a "good guy" - when there are so many similar choices, it certainly helps to know that the guy behind the milling machine is a decent human being and will take care of his customers.

I am in the process of purchasing a Byron "tour 009" style full copper handmade, he has been nothing but perfect as far as answering my MANY questions about the amount of Toe grind, Heel grind, sole shape, gram weight....everything. I am probably the annoy customer who wants to know it all but can't afford half of what he wants. I have dealt with him strictly via email, few phone conversations, always responds within 2 hours to emails and almost always picks up the phone when you call. Great stuff from what I have seen in person. I am actually liquidating my small SC collection in order to make the full on switch to a Byron.

I have a buddy here in town who sent a OTR Newport 2 SS to Slighter and had him trick it out a bit...it came back looking completely awesome...but in my opinion if you are going to do some custom work to an OTR putter, just send it back to the Studio Shop. Sligter has some VERY solid designs, but most of his original stuff is a bit over done for my taste.

Like LaMont, I've owned Byron's putters since the John Byron days. They have always been well designed and crafted instruments. I worked with Byron on THIS custom putter for myself. It was really a wonderful experience starting out with just a general idea and then to my lousy drawings and then finally the finished product.

 

Byron is extremely patient. I know this because I'm very anal when it comes to things like custom putters and although I'm thousands of miles away from him, he made me feel close by keeping me well connected through out the project. Byron will also not hesitate to tell you his opinion on your idea. If he feels it's not right, he won't just do it because you're paying him.

 

If you're looking at getting a custom, I'd highly recommend Byron. He's truly a great "artist" in his work...and on top of it all, a very nice guy as well.
