Driver lie

Wondering if anyone who tinkers with persimmons feels that the lie with drivers is important or has modified theirs ? At 5,8" with long arms and flat swing I find the driver sits on the heel. Ive done some research that has mentioned its not as important for the driver, plus the "drooping" of the club at impact negates that...any feedback is appreciated.

I too, am cursed, or blessed, with the same type of physical attributes. That is one reason, in my opinion, I find the vintage irons easy to play without modification. I have never "modified" a wood, but, have been curious about the "what if" I found one with a flatter lie angle. I known I can tell the difference on strikes depending upon my wrist angle, but in the heat of battle I find that an exceptionally fickle intent.

There are a few reasons why lie angle shouldn't be a huge issue in a driver. So long as you're not trying to hit the ball off the deck, there's no interaction between the sole and the turf to worry about plus the change in face angle that comes from the loft angle being tilted left or right is minimal because of how little loft you have to start with.

 

That said, it was always the case when all woods were made of wood that the driver was thought to be the hardest club in the bag to hit - the least loft travelling at the fastest speed the farthest away from you. So I wouldn't like to say at what point minimal becomes negligible.

 

Plus, an awful lot of what differentiated wooden drivers was visual rather than technical. I can imagine how a perceived upright lie, especially if your typical miss is a hook, could get in your head to the point that you'd be looking for a flatter lie for peace of mind if nothing else. I know I used to hate as a junior playing with clubs that were a little too long for me and that sat on the heel as a result.

 

The upshot? If you can ignore it, it's probably safe to ignore it. But if you can't, it doesn't mean you're crazy...

I actually modified a nicklaus murfield mac to my specs...i lile that it sits flat for me. It is an enjoyable project.

If you notice on TV, a lot of the guys on tour (with modern drivers) all set up with the club with the nose up. It may be because of the head "flattening out" when the swing is made but, nevertheless, toe up is the norm. In the old days, Fuzzy Zoeller was an extreme example...I was always amazed at the sight on TV.

 

My driver lie is that I hit it 320 yards. If off-center, it only goes 305.

I know a few people who have modified their woods to be flatter. I'm always on the hunt for flatter woods that are stock so I only have to pay $20.

 

I strongly prefer a flatter wood. To me it's quite noticeable.
