Callaway Micro Laser Rangefinder

Bit of a backstory: I previously used the Callaway/Nikon LR550 for maybe seven years; fast, durable, bulletproof, loved it. Left it at my sister's house in SoCal in my spare bag when I was visiting in March. Asked her to send it back to me at her convenience, no rush since I'm OK using an iPhone app for distances. Opened up a package she sent a few days ago, and found a new Callaway Micro Laser in it. Turns out her boss's brother is a Callaway rep and either gave it to her, or gave her a huge discount (didn't ask). Anyway, a real nice surprise.

 

Just got to use it once so far, but it's pretty awesome. You don't actually hold it up against your eye, you hold it six inches to a foot in front of your eye. Looking through the viewfinder, you see a black box outline and a red dot. You align the red dot on the target within the box, it beeps when the target is hit, and the range is displayed on the LCD screen below the viewfinder. A bit of a learning curve, but really easy, intuitive, and super fast once you get the hang of it. It's also very small (3.5" long, which is about 1.5" shorter than my old Callaway which I thought was pretty small to begin with) and lightweight (4 oz). Has three target modes: laser (all-around general mode), pin (more precise for flagsticks and smaller objects), and prism (for flagsticks that have reflectors, haven't tried that yet).

 

All-in-all very happy with it so far. To be honest, I wasn't looking for a new one, and the $299 retail isn't cheap, but if I were in the market for one at that price point, it's definitely one to consider.

Thanks for the review. I just ordered one of these as an Amazon Warehouse deal for $137. I like that it is compact. I was hoping to use it with a Monument Golf magnetic cover, but it looks like it will cover the mode button...
