Membership Recommendation — South of Hartford

Please recommend me a course for membership, live in Rocky Hill just south of Hartford. NO WAY can I afford TPC, I wish!

I am tired of junk range balls and crappy facilities. I don't want to have to worry about how much I'm paying per ball I hit or when/when can't I play.

I am looking for a place where I can get better at the game. Chip & Putt, hit range balls, hop out and WALK 9.

Requirements:

Range

Chipping Green

Don't mind a 9 hole

Reasonable Cost of Membership

Looked at Indian Hills in Newington, looks like a decent spot. Just worried I'll hit the clubhouse with my hybrid on the range and no chipping green.

Would love to hear any ideas. Thanks fellow WRXs hidden amongst this area!

Not sure of your budget or age bracket but Wallingford CC and The Farms (also in Wallingford) are both options relatively close to Rocky Hill. Many clubs offer junior memberships as well and I know Wallingford had some crazy cheap deal two years ago when I first began shopping around for a club.

Thanks for the thought, they look like nice courses for sure! Not sure if I'd get the use out of a club that's over 20 mins away. Tough area to find options, so congested.

Have you looked into wethersfield country club? I get emails from them all the time looking for new members. I'll be playing there for the first time this week so i'll have more info then. I personally like indian hill. My grandmother has been a member there for 30+ years. But like you said the driving range is only 225 yards long and only a little putting green. Wallingford is decent. Irons only range and one putting green. Also tough to walk 9 as it ends far from the clubhouse. other options around are Shuttlemeadow in kensington, and farmington country club.

Wethersfield CC will be your best bet. Nice course in good condition and has a range and putting green. Also affordable. Other than that you need to drive 20 minutes or so to find something comparable.

I always thought Wethersfield was expensive. Anyone care to share pricing?

I'm leaning toward Indian Hills right now. Going to play the course next week and see what it's like, I've heard very positive things from everyone about it!

I would say their junior pricing is competitive; but regular pricing I would put on the higher side. I would look to shuttlemeadow or glastonbury hills before Wethersfield at those rates.

Not to mention, that has the be the MOST confusing listing for dues ever. Why do I have the feeling it's structured to hide hidden charges!

Joining Indian Hills!

It's close and convenient, course is great shape, excellent greens. I can still hit long irons on range corner to corner, so I'll figure something out. Not to mention, if I'm slicing my 5iron, I'll certainly slice my driver, so in a way the short range might push me to focus on fundamentals more. Hopefully :_)

Really seems like a solid place. So we'll give it go. Either way, joining a club will allow me to think more about being a better player and less about the a la carte cost of becoming a better player. Just having a go to place to play and practice I think will be key.

Any WRXers a member there?

I wish i would have seen this earlier, TPC had some good membership incentives for prospectives in May. I am a member and also live in the residences there.

The current membership initiation is the lowest it has been, but will soon be going up. The PGA Tour just did a 3.5 million dollar renovation to the course and it is truly sensational now. We just had the 3 day member guest and the course was set up to be the same for the m/g as the upcoming Travelers Championship. 45 five bunkers were removed and all the rest were completely done over per tour specs with no accessments. See you at the Travelers Championship!

Do you have the details on what the incentives/prices are for a new junior member?

I was going to suggest Shuttle Meadow, my best friend is the assistant superintendent and they have that place in the best condition I can ever remember thanks to the super they brought in about 3 or 4 years ago...but it looks like you're going to Indian Hills!

I played Indian Hills a few years ago as well, and thought it was nice.
