Vintage Club Knowledge

Good evening all,

 

This is the beginning of my foray into vintage clubs, and I hope to draw on the collective knowledge here which, from what I can tell, is quite considerable. Pictured below is my first purchase, a set of woods 1,3,4, and 5. They are PGA branded woods, and info on them seems quite hard to come by due to any search involving "PGA" and thus flooding the results with info on the association itself as well as more modern clubs. My hope was to access any memories or information posters here may have on them. I'm a youn gun trying out the vintage game and need the help of those vastly more experienced with this era! Any info would be appreciated, even if the clubs suck. I made sure to go for what fit into the budget so it wouldn't be a huge loss and I'll have fun getting better at hitting them regardless. Next to arrive are Nicklaus DIV irons 3-PW and Spaulding Executive 3-SW and a brass Spaulding Putter, I'll post on arrival. I'm very excited, this will be quite the departure from my Modern Cobra Fly-Z's and Odyssey Tour Pro #7!

Judging by the club face those appear to be the solid wood (vs laminate) and many of the PGA brand clubs were quite good. I'm guessing here but believe those to be mid-70's to maybe early 80's. I think probably mid-70's. Someone else here may know for sure.

I personally play a brass Acushnet flange putter and used to game an Odyssey 2-Ball. You will quickly find that good equipment is good equipment. A good swing or stroke yields good results and that most equipment claims are hype.

Welcome to the world of classic golf - it's fun and addicting! Your PGA woods look like quality equipment to me. The heads are persimmon so they're not dime store stuff. Pretty swanky looking face inserts too. I think whether they suck or not will likely depend more on the shaft than anything.

 

As for irons, nothing (other than persimmon) says "classic" like a set of blades. Don't drink the cavity-back Kool-Aid. ☺ Good luck with your classic golf adventures.

Agree. Looks to be early '70's persimmon. Depending on shaft for exact year. Toe decal(The Professional)? not shown.

Toe decal indeed says "professional". Herculite Light Weight T shafts. Looking forward to feeling what it's like to hit one on the screws, if I can manage it that is.

IIRC, the PGA brand was the predecessor of the Tommy Armour Golf Company (of 845s fame). I do recall my next door neighbor growing up got a nice set of hand me down PGA blades from his dad in the '70s. They were members of a pretty tony country club back then and I'd be pretty surprised if the PGAs didn't come from the club pro shop.
