You UK guys, do you play in this stuff?

Recommended Posts

Over.

I bought my first-ever pair of waterproof pants while on a UK trip. Normally I don't play in rain but I was going to have to on this one day (social obligation). I went in the locker room to get dressed for golf and had to ask one of the locals whether you wear them alone or over regular long pants. His answer was "over" in a tone of voice that made it seem he thought it was a pretty obvious thing, which I suppose it was.

Ha! Thanks.

Perhaps the guys in the videos expected rain on every hole, not trusting the sun to stay out! I sought out rain gear that you can swing in...as well as various blend/ratio of breathability and protection...It's clear from watching the Scottish Open and The Open Championship this year, that short of lightning, THE GAME MUST GO ON.

The most interesting pieces of gear I decided on were FIRE RETARDANT pants...intended for fighting fires they have a tighter weave than denim, but look like regular slacks (fine for mist and that constant off-shore wet air)..and a motorcycle jacket(!) intended to be worn over "dry" riding gear.

Sounds like a combination of straightjacket and sauna. Seriously. I can't imagine playing golf in firefighter's pants or a motorcycle jacket.

...they're really not very different from what the guys were wearing in the video. The pants look, feel, "hang" like any regular pants, and the motorcycle jacket has elbow and shoulder slick-proof material over the rip-stop nylon....I do have a jacket that's entirely slick-proof like real rain pants I'll wear when the rain gets "real." All have hoods, and I'll have hats with drawstrings to keep them on my slick peak in the wind. Better safe and dry than soaked and sorry. Here's a review....note the longer tail....nice for that proper golf stance!

In any case, they don't seem to inhibit my awful swing.

Its usually the case in the UK that when it rains there is usually wind to go with it, but not always the other way round, yesterday as an example it was ahout 20-25 mph winds but still quite warm so i just wore a tee shirt with a galvin green windstopper on top.

Today its still about 20-25 mph but much colder and raining, today would be the full monty, galvin green goretex jacket and trousers, whatever you can get your hands on :) Galvin Green seems to have taken off as being the best you can buy these days, check them out not cheap but last for an eternity.

I tend to agree to agree that motorcycle jackets and fire fighting trousers sound a bit over the top to me. Its Scotland not Antarctica that your heading for to knock a wee white ball around. Just one set of decent golf waterproofs will suffice. Pack a hat and a pair of mitts and you'll be ticketyboo!

Layering is more important. Couple of base layers, windproof or pullover and your normal golfing attire coupled with your outerwear and you'll be fine for anything that September in Scotland can throw at you.

Thanks Craw for the "warm" words....it's been 33°+c here when I've headed for the course these past 4 months....playing in temps half-that will be a relief! The layers will get a nice test in Iceland where I hope to play a round near a geo-thermal geyser park.
