shot trackers/gps/rangefinders - with golfsmith going bankrupt how did you buy your tech?

I was speaking to a buddy this morning about the Golfsmith/Nike news and we were wondering if the golf retail model has to change. We started discussing golf tech and whether golfers bought their tech from retail stores, online stores, direct from brand (if they can) or through other channels.

 

We didn't really have an answer so I thought I would canvas from the experienced golfwrxers who buy everything under the sun :)

 

We both thought tech purchases were different to the normal clothing, hardware or sundries so really interested to hear feedback.

A couple drivers back, I visited a Golf Galaxy, got fit for a driver and purchased it at the store. I am not sure this is typical. Golf Galaxy is a great store to just browse, eyes on, hands on and try out clubs. Then go home, fire up the laptop and search for the exact item (free ship) and buy. For years I've wondered how the brick and mortar store can stay open. At times I thought the stores must be getting a percentage from online sales, however with Golfsmiths demise I'm probably wrong. Don't know the answer, I guess the market will continue to work itself out. As far as my old Bushnell laser, my watch, bag, shoes, Golfsense device, these were all online purchases.

Yeah, just one in a sequence of brick and mortar stores that are gonna go the way of the do-do. Business model unsustainable with online competition.

 

On the other hand, I can see the Roger Dunn super store near me lasting because they have a robust used/trade-in business going for people that flip their equipment frequently. Plus, they have tons of hitting bays and monitors to mess around in. Place is always packed, even in the middle of the day during the week.
