Hogan Slazenger Sunburst Irons, with photos...and questions...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've trawled through some great threads looking for some more info on these clubs but not found too much other than Slazenger had the licence to sell Hogan clubs in the UK/Europe.

I picked up a set recently and was thinking about re-shafting them to put into play so wanted to know the tip size? They currently have the original 'pro-fit' shafts in them. Hoping they are .355 so I can put some S400 taper tips in them or ideally if I can get my hands on some, Apex 4's.

Would it be blasphemy to re-shaft them? If new shafts don't go in them they will unfortunately have to be moved on as my collection is getting far too big....are they worth significantly more with the original shafts?

They came with the matching persimmons too, but unfortunately the binding/twine on the driver is coming loose. Anyone know of a good place for repairs in the UK, ideally south of England?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I'll try to get some photos up soon as I know you all love a good perv on some old butter knives.

Cheers

I've seen lots of sets reshafted, so you won't be the only sinner (if it IS wrong to reshaft them). I'm curious what the headweights and shaft weights are when disassembled. Did they use heavier heads with with heavier shafts, or were they all stock with different shafts? You could keep the original shafts in case you want to return them to like-original condition. I think they're pinned, so you'd have to get those out first. I have a reshafted set (not slazenger) with some TT DG shafts, so I'm gonna guess the s400s will fit, but I don't know if the previous owner bored out the hosel at all...

How do they feel with the Pro-Fit (R?) shafts?

Looking forward to those pics :)

Thanks for the reply.

The Pro-Fit shafts were just too soft for the me but the heads felt really nice. Looks like the Slazenger version was stainless steel rather than the chromed US version which means the clubs are still in pretty good condition. Given how soft they felt when hit I'd be surprised if the chromed version made that much of a difference...and no shaft pins which makes DIY a little easier.

Nice iron set - should play very nicely. The woods & putter will certainly also be fun to play. If you learn to putt with that Eaglet you'll be able to putt with anything. Should get a very nice roll on the ball !

The irons would probably go for £50-100 as they are, (probably lower end without the Equaliser or Exploder) so feel free to re-shaft as you like, as you aren't exactly destroying a huge resale value here :)

Being forged stainless steel, they would buff/polish up like new if you that way inclined ...

Regarding maintenance, I would try someone like Roger Morton at Golf Only in Shifnal, near Telford. He was the Hogan repair guy in UK in the 80s and probably has as much experience and knowledge of classic club repair as anyone in the UK. His hickory club refurbishment is an art form in itself.

Whereabouts in the South are you btw ?

In another thread from today is a post with videos of how to re-whip a wood.....I'm sure that the little bit off whipping you need to do you can actually do yourself, and then....you will be forever hooked on finding, fixing, and playing these great old clubs.

If I was able to learn how to re-whip a wood, I'm sure that you can as well, and the videos will certainly help you.

Good luck, and let us know how you did!

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
