Inside - Square move

What is best way to feel this 'coming from inside" move. I try holding back to target as hands drop as well as trying to uncoil from ground up .. seems like shoulders want to spin out.

woild like to feel like right shoulder is coming from inside then arms etc. is this correct? if so what are drill or exercises to get this down

without this inside position impact and release won't mean much

The inside to out move can be done in two ways. One is to simply stay on plane back and through. This is very easy with the shorter clubs. Just swing the club in a nice, controlled rythum, back and through. When you are at the top of your swing, let both arms pull down on the club with equal force. This will help keep you from flipping the club or hitting "at" the ball, and will encourage a complete follow through.

The second way is to drop your right elbow towards your right pocket, then release the club with the inside to out move. Jim Furyk comes to mind with his radical inside to out move.

To help you accomplish this, try these two tips:

1. Set up at impact. Position your golf club where you want to be, with your arms in the position they "need" to be in at impact. It's very easy to return where you start, and impact is the most important position in the golf swing.

2. One inch forward and and two inches over from your ball, push in another golf tee. This gives you a visual clue where the follow through path you want your club to follow, the inside to out path.

Start your swings at 60 percent and slowly work towards 90 percent. If you find the harder you swing the more mishits you have, before you blame yourself, check your shafts. They may not be stiff enough.

right elbow into body does help, but only if I make good turn in backswing. once I get elbow moving into body I seem to get stuck on back foot a bit "hanging back" I know I need to get more weight into left side because I'm losing wrist angle -in right hand not able to get decent impact -release .. so I exaggerate weight shift and spin out or sway to target - head does not stay back.

guess its all timing and seqence of body parts in correct order -- hard to do on my own can't see path

I've got a drill that was shown to me by a Callway rep at demo day. Bar none best drill I've ever seen and I hit every iron a club longer after using it for a few weeks.

I call it a "stagger step". It's fairly simple. Just put your left foot (I'm assuming you are right handed) ahead of the right, like you are setting up for a massive draw. Now simply swing around your body. Once you start hitting it solid the club comes from the inside every time. I was amazed once I started flushing my 7rion 180 out of this stance and I use it every now and then on the course for real shots.

I'll make a video of it if you need. Just LMK.

It doesn't really matter, it's just a drill. I also set up open, especially with short irons. I still move my short irons slightly R to L out of an open stance. Once I grooved the inside-inside move along with staying connected with both arms I started hitting irons smoother and longer. I can now almost rely on my flushed shot distance. lol.

you still move R-L with an open stance...? how do you keep from hooking the ball from a square stance...? seems like you come from way inside...

I don't hook it, I end up pushing it. Have you ever read "5 lessons"? I pretty well use the exact stance/ball position (well...stance since I can't move the ball, right. lol) as he shows. With a driver I actually have open hips/slightly closed shoulders. I try to base my swing after that book as much as possible and it's improving.

I'm not talking about a big draw or anything. I'm talking less than a yard or 2 on an 8iron but still it moves R to L almost every time. I fade my driver 2-3 yds. on a solid drive.

many times I will come from inside and either not release hands so club face is open at impact or I will not let left arm swing out, kind of pulling it back towards body resulting in cut / glance .

'If I can manage a bit inside with relaxed wrists ,let club release big difference

If you can find a place to hit off grass, a field or something would be great, just hit wedges. I hit my GW or SW for hundreds of shots. The weight of the head helps to feel that release and letting the clubhead do the work. I was amazed when I swung a 7iron like a 70 yd. Sandwedge and it flew high and dead straight over 160. The wedge routine also helps me get connected as well as in tempo.

It is true that the clubhead has to approach the ball from the inside. However, many golfers exaggerate the inside move during the takeaway and they then come too much from the inside during the downswing - the clubshaft is too inside, instead of being along the toe line, when the hands reach waist level and the right elbow is jammed into the right side.

This "pump it" drill shows how the clubshaft should be along the right forearm in the early downswing, and then parallel to the ball-target line at the delivery position.
