What is the best replacement or a Garmin S1?

Recommended Posts

I've had my Garmin S1 for 6 years and while it has performed very well, I know that it has some age on it so I'm considering a replacement. I love the S1's simplicity and don't need all the features on some of the new ones such as scorekeeping (the paper scorecard and pencil work just fine). Having said that I would like the FCB yardage as I have on my S1 but would like distance to traps, water, etc. What are the best golf watches with these criteria that I should consider? Just so you know, my golfing partner has the S20 but he complains that it has too many features and it slows him down. Another golf buddy has a laser but complains that if he is off the fairway and does not have a clear view of the flag it is useless. I want to keep it simple and easy to use. So, in your learned opinion, what should be my next golf watch?

If he complains about too many s20 features, why not just turn off autoshot and scoring? You can play without interacting with it and just read yardages like you do with the s1. Same can be said for my x40. The only time you need to press buttons is to see hazards.

Check out the below demo vid from Garmin. Notice that the device shows all the yardages you need without pressing buttons (like your S1) and you only need to press buttons for hazards.

Thanks for the video. I'll be taking a look at the S20. Seems like everyone is selling them for $230.00, not too bad of a price.

Glad to be of help. I was thinking about the S20 myself to replace my Bushnell Neo-x, then along came the Garmin X40. The dual fitness/golf functionality of the X40 won me over and I generally like it. Let us know if you pull the trigger on the S20.

I have a near dead S1, got about 400 rounds out of it. About a year ago I misplaced it and bought a clip on golf buddy...distance to green center only. I then found the watch which is limping along. I really wish Apply Watch would come out with something decent since the cost is in range of the golf specific watches. Since it's winter here I have time. I'm thinking a laser with the cheap golf buddy in my pocket would work also especially since lasers are more accurate and shake resistant.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
