Slightly Outside Takeaway

Hi all,

In my swing I'm unable to make consisent, and/or solid contact unless I start the club somewhat outside the line, with the club set high at the end of my backswing. No matter whether I take the club inside or outside on the takeaway, I route in pretty hard from the inside, and find this move to be the best way for me to swing consistently, but I still have problems with wildness, including massive duck hooks.

Could any fellow sufferers and/or swing gurus do me the great favor of giving out some advice?


Here is a youtube clip of three driver swings. These are pretty run of the mill swings for me, and I'm sure you'll notice the craziness in my footwork? Any tips?

The swing looks on plane to me. I'm no instructor, but I try not to get too technical with things and focus on very simple things like alignment, grip and tempo. Also, it's very hard to make an "outside takeaway". I find that if I keep the club travelling down the line for as long as possible on the way back and then come into the ball from the inside that my shots are pretty consistent. Generally if I pull or hook the ball it's b/c I've taken the club too far inside to begin with, causing me to be across the line at the top, which requires an "over the top" move in order to get back on plane. I hate using the term "over the top" because I think it's over-used in analysis of swing faults, and because there are a number of things that can cause it. I would also encourage the use of a neutral grip if you are not using one already. I sometimes hook the ball as a result of my right hand being too far under the club, causing me to close the face at impact. Seeing as how you are on plane, I would check grip before anything else.
