Cupping wrist

I really notice that when I get quick and hook the ball my wrist is very cupped at top. Is there any drills someone can suggest for keeping a nice flat wrist to minimize the hook.

Here is the tip the asst. at my club gave me.

First at setup. make sure the club is more ahead of the ball so that when you take your grip your lift wrist is already flat (without the notch or cup in it already).

second, on the takeaway, Instead of "cocking" both wrists on the way back. Consciously pull your right hand back (like you are trying to hold a tray of drinks), don't do anything with your left wrist. Try this and stop and look at your position at the top. your wrist should be flat and the head square to the plane of your swing.

hope this helps. It eliminated my cupping at the top which led to erratic driving. now i am more consistent and can work the ball better than ever before.

(BTW, this asst. is a class A pro and BOMBS the ball. 330-350 and is +2, so i believe he knows what hes is talking about

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think cupping the wrists opens the clubface at the top and promotes a slice. So if you are cupping it at the top and still hooking it, your wrists are overcompensating at impact or you've got a swing path problem.

Actually, I believe if you cup your wrists at the top of the swing it will open the face. A bowed left wrist at the top will shut the face. If your wrists are cupped at the top the clubface will be open, leading to the slice.

i think both of you guys are correct. if there is no compensation bodybugg is correct, however sometimes a person will try to correct it and then go the other way.

Cup your wrist, keep your left shoulder ahead during downswing, that's choke-hook, or backspin hook rather than topspin hook.

I went through a period where I was cupping my wrist and hitting hooks. Now, I cup my wrist to hit a fade. The only difference is, when I was cupping at the top and hitting hooks, I wasn't keeping the cup through the shot, I would try to flatten my wrist on the way down, which leads to an excessively closed clubface. Now, to hit a fade, I'll set up to cut across the ball and hold the cupped wrist through the shot. A hook can also be caused when you're not cupped at the top, but become cupped at the bottom as a result of flipping at the ball. I could go on and on as there are so many combos that can cause a hook, but the ones listed are the ones I've found to be true with my own game.
