How old are these irons?

Recommended Posts

The irons are Wilson X/31 plus 3-PW. I have not been able to find out anywhere how old they are so i figured why not try and see if someone on this site knows. I got these as payment for cleaning my mom's friend's clubs and bags since I wanted to get back into golf after having not played since outgrowing a junior set I had. Thanks for any response!

In hindsight, lack of decals and/or bright colors etc probably puts them in Wriggles 80s 90s timeframe.

Ironfinder shows a cast CB X31 iron in 88-89. Prior to that, with one exception, each model of X31 looked to be some form of blade iron. The exception is an X31 Plus in the mid 70s, which looked to be a flat blade with a hollow spot milled out of it.

Seems to me the X31 Plus would follow said cast X31 cb in model progression.

And, just because we can, the X31 Plus from 1976:

I had a set of Pal Joeys that looked very similar to your X/31's. I bought them in 1989, for $318, 8 irons, 3 small metal woods. I foolishly traded them in 1997, wish I'd kept them. Very similar to PIngs.

Around 15 years ago, I bought a nice set of Ping Karsten 2's from 1975. ($84) I play them often, hopefully, I'll never part with them. Good clubs.

Most X/31's I've seen are blades. I passed on a set at Goodwill some years ago. I've remarked elsewhere my local Goodwill has really dried up. Nothing good for several years.

Cheers!

Similar to 1200 GE's of the 80's and the Ultralite Cavity back. What shaft do they have? Definitely a little ping flare in them.

Seen some of these in sets with X31 Plus metal woods on fleaBay.

The X31 line...it will never die.

the only marking on the shaft is that it says Wilson X/31 plus R-flex and then O2E

Bummer... The x31's were originally their own line. Into the '80's and 90's they took after other lines of Wilson clubs and looked very similar to other models. Ultra/System 45's, ProStaff's, etc. These definitely look like the transition era and when everyone had a ping look-a-like out. Nothing else left to do but take them out and see what they hit like. A good starter set for getting back into the game.

they were more middle to late 80s.. i remember playing with a guy, that had bought 1,3,5 woods and 3 thru PW. the woods had graphite shafts in them. If you havent played graphite from the 80s or before, then they are nothing like what is available today. my buddy took a big swing, and broke the driver about 4 inches above the whipped hosel. think mom and pop sporting goods, where you took your kid to buy little league stuff. these were sold all together in an open face cardboard box. back then you could buy a set of Ben Hogan forged Redlines 3 thru E wedge for about 300 to 350 bucks. I bought my first set of Hogans in 86, 1 thru E wedge for 350.00 These were more like 199.00 for everything. If i remember right, there was some kind of Wilson putter with it. I have been playing golf for 43 years. I have seen it all. Even a couple driving a cart in the woods, to have sex.

Good to hear from you again.

Still feel the AMF/Ben Hogan Apex 5 shaft was the best steel shaft ever made?

yes the ones that say AMF Frequency matched from the middle 80s were light weight. Threw the ball low and had tons of spin. The DGx100 was much the same but threw the ball higher. The x300 taper tip, 135 grams or there about, were and are great shafts too.
