anyone want to diagnose my buddies swing fault...?

last year this guy was a monster driver... he was 10-20 yards beyond me on the norm...

 

i evened that up towards the end of the year, and was usually a little beyond him...

 

all this year though, his driver and most of his game has been utter crap...

 

off the tee, he basically hit a low, LOW hook... shoots out right and then just comes way back across usually well left of the faiway...

 

he's playing a Cleveland Launcher 9.5 with a S flex OEM shaft in it...

 

his irons are Cally x20 with that Uniflex shaft in it...

 

he's a pretty big swinger, and has a quick swing (almost too quick to me)...

 

his iron misses are the same giant hook, but usually with a high ball flight...

 

his "pro" told him he needs to work on his left elbow and that it's getting too far from his body... that kinda seemed like bunk to me, as his issue to me seems a much too far inside path...

 

his driver he's obviously smoothering it, and maybe all teh shafts he is playing are too weak for him...?

 

anyone want to chime in here...?

i noticed his club is really laid off at the top, and is pointing way right of the target as well...

I thought laid off was leaving the swing short and to far left of the target, that sounds like an overswing and could be a problem of his maybe?

flipping it = turning it over.

 

get him to hit a long iron, but start with another ball behind the club. make sure he pushes the ball straight back away from the target to begin his take away. should help with swing plain a bit.

 

I fought off the hooks myself. . .it was a combination of letting my arms get away from my body and letting my left arm break down at the top.

 

I also have a tendency to turn over to much if my tempo gets fast.

Essentially it's a "flick" or "flip" of the wrists that is intended to try and square the clubface. Because he is swinging so more inside/out if he didn't flip, he'd hit probably a 40 yard push but because he flips at it, it will take a lot of loft off the face and he'll hit it low and to the left.
