how do I know if its a square groove

have a ping eye 2 sw how do I know for sure that its a square groove model?

If it is a true square groove, there will be a blank area in the lower left cavity. If there is a +, or a very small drilled dot, it is a conforming groove. Without pics, it's hard to nail it down.

Most EYE2 irons have square-grooves, however, the earliest EYE2 irons (1982 to mid-1984) had V-grooves. The way to determine if they are the V-grooves: on the cavity side of the head, 'KARSTEN MFG. CORP. PHOENIX AZ 85068 U.S.A.' is upside-down in comparison to PING EYE2 in the cavity; these are V-groove. All other EYE2 irons have square grooves, and all PING irons since the EYE2 irons (EYE2+, ZING, ZING 2, ISI and i3) also have square grooves.

 

Q:What do the symbols + and dot (.) next to the patent numbers mean for the ping eye 2 irons? I believe the + means theyre Ping Eye 2 +s, but what about the dot?...Does the dot lob wedge have a different loft as opposed to the blank one which is 61 degrees?---- by the way, what is the "plus no plus" irons?

A: The dot means that they are an Eye 2 iron with a groove that conforms to the rules of the USGA as of 1990. The plus no plus were Eye 2+ irons that were made without the plus in the cavity. We added the plus to help distinguish between the two models.

I asked them last week if my EYE2s were the Plus no Plus variety and they replied back within a day informing me that mine were the square grooved models but not the + no +.

 

Replacement irons I found out yesterday from my golf shop for the EYE2s aren't cheap. I was quoted $110 each.

 

What I look for when browsing old clubs on the bay is for all of the words to be oriented the same on the club, all right side up, and for no + signs on the back of the cavity.

Hate to reply to something so old, but thought it might help others, here's a email I got from Ping for the very question:

 

1. 1982-1984, EYE2, Pat. Pending, GROOVES: V-grooves (on the cavity

2. late 1984-late 1989, EYE2, U.S. PAT. D276644, 4.512.577, GROOVES:

square grooves deemed "non-conforming" by the USGA. These were

grandfathered by the USGA and are legal for tournament play in the

U.S.

 

3. Nov. 89-Apr. 90, EYE2+ 'no +', U.S. PAT. 4.512.577, 4.621.813,

GROOVES: conforming square grooves.

 

4. April 90, EYE2+, U.S. PAT 4.512.577, 4.621.813, GROOVES:

conforming square grooves.

 

5. All PING irons from the EYE2+ and after (ZING, ZING2, ISI and i3)

have conforming square grooves.

 

The issue had to do with the distance between the grooves, not the

square grooves themselves. As part of the settlement, Karsten

agreed to modify the distance between the grooves (by about ½ of a

human hair-width), and the USGA agreed to grandfather all the EYE2

irons with the grooves that were deemed 'non-conforming'.

if i have 2 eye2 irons in front of me-one conforming-one non

conforming-how do i tell which one is what. i would like to find me

a set of the nonconforming square grooves eye2 but i dont know how

to tell the difference. can you go by the serial number? please
