Pine Lakes Golf Course - Jekyll Island, Georgia

Pine Lakes Golf Course is one of three 18 hole layouts located on Jekyll Island, Georgia. Pine Lakes, at one time, was the red headed step child of the three. I always felt that the Dick Wilson designed Oleander was a timeless classic, worthy of two to three rounds each time I visit.

However, this vacation, I split my golfing time between the two courses. In 2002 the State of Georgia freed up some money and golf course architect Clyde Johnston reworked this ultra-tight, tree lined course. I used to dread playing Pine Lakes, so much so that I usually skipped playing it all together. It has taken me 5 years just to play the newly redesigned course. Not anymore. Johnston reworked Pine Lakes in 2002, making it much more friendly to errant shots. Sure, you'll still need a decent degree of accuracy, there is no links golf here. The first thing that I noticed were LESS trees, and more bunkers. The greens were also much more contoured, yet still fair. I am not sure if I am a fan of bermuda greens though. The course still winds its way lazily through an island forest and no, you will not see any homes, just a few gators and lots of deer. The course is also kid friendly (special US Kids tee boxes for all) and quite an easy walk as well.<!--more-->

Pine Lakes was a former host to the US Kids National golf tourney. The NCAA Division 3 Men' s Golf Championships have been played at Jekyll Island on more than one occasion. After my round I felt that Pine Lakes was almost the equal of Oleander. Oleander is a great course, one of my all time favorites. Now if only the State of Georgia would free up some more money to renovate the venerable Oleander golf course next.

You'll still need some degree of accuracy off the tee on the Pine Lakes Course.

Thankfully courses still exsist without any  homes lining the fairways!

Pssst..please don't tell anyone here, but Pine Lakes is located on Jekyll Island, GA,

about 60 miles north of the Florida border. Jekyll Island is a great golf retreat

(really not much there at all) and with the exception of spring time, surprisingly,

it is really never all that crowded here.

I'd like to keep it that way.

it is a nice little course. I go down to J.I. every time i go home (Valdosta). like Bag Chatter stated not many people.

 

hoping i'm not think of the wrong course be the wife rents bike and takes a trip around the island and the kinds play putt putt right there in the parking lot, also beach right accross the parking lot...

 

pls correct me if i'm wrong so i can find out what the corse name is.....
