Questions about skytrak

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about a Skytrak. My garage is odd-shaped - I can't really use it inside.

What are the issues involved using it in the backyard? How user-friendly is it if you have to take it down and then set it up? It means, among other things, that no large video would be possible. I have a mat and net already, so that is a non-issue. Most of the setups I have seen are all inside and pretty permanent.

PS: I am in Los Angeles, so I don't worry about winter or rain too much.

Skytrack should work perfectly well in this scenario, better if you can get a reliable broadband signal in the yard for licence subscription authentication. It is small and very portable. Positioning it takes seconds and you can couple it up to an ipad to view the data or sim display (the more powerful the better). The protective case is a worthwhile investment.

Skytrack have finally got around to the promised integration with the Skypro analyser, so adding one will provide more accurate clubhead speed information and provide additional data such as angle of attack (acknowledging accuracy of this data is unlikely to be comparable with ‘professional’ launch monitors)

The Skytrak is very user friendly for conveniently transporting the device and setting it up. My 'hitting bay' is in a detached garage and I carry the ST in the Full Metal Jacket protective case along with my iPad. It only takes a minute if that long to set up and open the app. I agree with what DaveMac mentioned about having a good WiFi signal, you will need this if you plan to play WGT simulation golf. However, you don't need WiFi just to open the ST app and use the driving range.

I love my ST and use it everyday. This season will be my first to see how much improvement I have made since practicing on the ST.

I’m 100% driving range in the winter and 100% practice range in the warmer part of the season (when I am not playing obviously).

I was an early adopter to Skytrack but I had frequent licensing issues at the driving range which resulted in the loss of session data, the issue might have been fixed by now. I do see you still need to switch on the Skytrack unit for your ipad to check your subscription before you can review any data, not a method of operation that makes any sense to me. I went with a Flightscope Xi which is better for reviewing session data, although I would have liked launch angle and spin data that Skytrac and unfortunately Mevo provides.

Thx. I don’t think I’d play sim stuff so that’s all good. I read somewhere that now you can sync skypro to skytrak and get club data integrated. Anyone know about this?

I use mine for practice indoors now but when I first got my ST I set up with a net, hitting pad and used the app on my phone and it was great. If the weather here in CO would allow for it I would probably keep my setup outside year round.

I may try the Skypro at some point if I can catch it on sale but the reviews on Amazon are somewhat concerning. The integration seems a bit fiddly too but that could get better. I could be wrong but it might only work on the PC app.

Good luck. It's some of the best money I've spent on golf ever.

I have used SkyTrak since Fall of last year and credit it with taking 6+ strokes off my handicap.

I use it indoors - but have heard that the SkyTrak can have a hard time reading balls in bright sunlight. I have no experience with this -- but based on what is said in this thread, that seems to not be the case. I may take mine to the range today just to see if there are any issues.

The other issue I have heard is that you cannot use it on turf (you must use off a mat). This is because the flying dirt/debris at impact causes confusion for the SkyTrak. But I believe that is the same with any camera based LM (i.e., GC2).

These stories of hdcp drop are really impressive. Other than just more frequent practice I am wondering what people found is most beneficial in this? Was it gettting distances dialed in, especially with wedges? Or ???

All of the above ... as Hogan said -- the secret to golf is found in the dirt ... or in my case somewhere in the turf mat. .... and I am still looking.

I am thinking that for me the benefit might be that it would get me more target focused (vs swing process focused) and better distance understanding for each club.

In order to think about the target I would need more than the basic setup....including video projection. Ugh now it just doubled in price I think...

I don't use a projector currently. I have a 40" TV that I display the shots onto and hit into a net. I will upgrade at some point, but it works great. My brother and I have played on it together serveral times. I have used it indoors and outdoors.

**I have a gc2, but would have skytrak setup the same. I use JNPG for simulation and combines.
